Simple 144hz monitor?

Post by tarr0 » 21 Oct 2014, 14:40

I'm looking for a 144hz monitor that has solid performance and good colours. It doesn't need any features such as G-sync, blur-reduction or be lightboost compatible because they won't be used but it does need to be capable of producing a good image. It doesn't have to be something that came out recently but flicker free is a bonus and height adjustability would also be welcome. Does such a monitor exist?

Also are all 144hz monitors TN panels?

Thanks.

There is the eizo FG2421 it has a va panel so the colors and black will be better then most tn's. I am not sure about the input lag on it but I thought it was very good. You get blur reduction as a bonus it has a 120hz panel though. Most other tn paneled 144hz screens are pretty much generic imo. Except for the asus pg278q which is on a whole new level. A benq xl2411z is the cheapest "generic" one in my country colors are above the standard cheapo tn monitor but nothing special.
So yeah if you want good colors the eizo is probably the best one or the asus since it has an 8 bit panel. If money is a concern then stay away from the asus pg278q though.
Or even better get a trinitron crt screen XD. Though they are harder to find nowdays and well its big bulky energy inneficient and even pretty pricey if the buyer knows his stuff.

Good luck,

I agree. If image quality is important to you, the Eizo FG2421 is the only 120Hz monitor with a non-TN panel.

I disagree that the blur reduction on the eizo fg2421 is a "bonus".
Because it looks like a main feature they advertise and the eizo fg2421 is a lot more expensive than your average 144hz monitor without any features. I dont believe the VA panel instead of a TN is what drives the price up so much on that monitor.

If you see a 144hz monitor without any features for X $, and a 144hz monitor with a feature for the same X $. Then you can call the feature a "bonus".

I personally would recommend a gsync monitor like acer xb270ha

because it is more expensive but still very similarly priced as a plain, featureless 144hz monitor of that size. (+ it has real 8 bit color, which most TN`s dont have)

But if gaming is not a concern of yours, you just want the best color, viewing angles and highest refresh rate then you are looking for one of those korean overclockable monitors.

You can count on having them @ 100hz. And 120hz or more if you are lucky.
Oh and they are 2560x1440 too.

If you dont care about price and 23" size doesnt bother you, by all means go for the eizo fg2421, its going to be the best looking 100+hz monitor with a warranty you can find right now. Yes, better looking than the pg278q from asus.

The Eizo's VA panel looks interesting but unfortunately it is a bit too expensive. I'm looking for a monitor around £200, can maybe stretch to £250. Sorry I should have mentioned that before. Would you say the xl2411z has the best colours in this price range? Or do Samsung/ASUS/etc monitors produce better image quality?

Also +1 to the CRT :D I miss my IBM p76 but there isn't enough room for a CRT any more :(

Ok thanks for clearing that up, I think Eizo (or someone) should release a cheaper monitor using VA technology, it would be perfect :D

I think 27" is both too big and out of my price range. The monitor will be used for gaming but also movies and general work use, there are so many high refresh rate monitors out there I'm hoping one of them has better colours than the average TN panel and for a good price.

I think my choices are:

AOC G2460PQU
IIYAMA ProLite GB2488HSU
BenQ XL2411Z
Acer GN246HL

The Acer doesn't have height adjustability so forget that one, but out of the other 3 I think only the Benq is PWM-free? However better colours is more important than PWM-free. If they all have the same colours I guess I will go for the Benq, does anyone know how the AOC or IIYAMA compare to the Benq?

I've read a review saying the Iiyama is PWM-free.

At this point it's between the Benq and the Iiyama for me

Pretty big review of the aoc and the iiyama. I couldnt find any good reviews for the benq though. But i did see the iiyama had bad contrast. I dont know if the benq is any better with contrast. A pro of the benq is better anti motion blur support though if you have a firmware v2. I know you dont care but hey maybe you will like it.

i think there are many complaints of quality control issues in the fg2421 thread at hardforum... but overall it should show a better image than tn panels do
