[ViewSonic XG2431] PureXP enabled + BFI software (SW) cause burn-in but BFI HW not

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, ToastyX, black frame insertion (BFI), and now framerate-based motion blur reduction (framegen / LSS / etc).

[ViewSonic XG2431] PureXP enabled + BFI software (SW) cause burn-in but BFI HW not

Post by nuninho1980 » 30 Aug 2025, 17:38

Hello.

I received new ViewSonic XG2431 monitor yesterday. I changed monitor from CRT monitor to new today. :)

Both PureXP enabled with Ultra preset and BFI software (SW) (eg: DesktopBFI, ShaderGlass...) cause burn-in at 1920x1080@100Hz with 50Hz BFI but BFI HW (hardware: PureXP* with same preset) only not.

* - at 50Hz, we can't enable PureXP+ due to be grey in OSD. :( But we need new firmware of ViewSonic to add 50Hz support for PureXP, ok?

Best regards. ;)

I've edited OP to add "Both PureXP... + BFI...". ;)

I think you should use Nvidia's Smooth Motion or LSFG (frame interpolation solutions) along with PureXP (LCD backlight strobing) instead of using 2 different single-strobe solutions.
Global scanning LCD backlight strobing (what PureXP is) exhibits extreme light flicker <100Hz, especially at the 50Hz value you're trying to target.
Low hz (<100hz) light flicker should be avoided at all cost for eye health.

Burn-in doesn't mean eyestrain but yes BFI SW affects XG2431/XG270 (only?) monitor.

I'll enable Smooth Motion... But I do never use Frame Generation.

NOTE: I don't have any eyes' health issues when I watch live TV at 50Hz on old CRT monitor but this is amazing as puresmooth motion.

I've updated to new lastest NVIDIA Studio v580.97 driver with lastest NV app for GeForce RTX 4090... but Smooth Motion is greyed.

I can't try LSFG due to paid. lol

I believe it was stuck at 10%PW/Ultra, so ~50 nits. I didn't check what firmware it was. All I know is V015 can't do it.

There is a way to strobe any Hz via service menu, but I'm not sure if I'm comfortable sharing how to since it involves playing with LED voltages. If u don't know what u're doing it can damage the backlight LEDs. Do it at your own risk!

Edit:
Service menu trick won't work well for <59 Hz. V015 batch double strobes as a flicker prevention. And if strobe phase is inaccurate it can't be fixed since Strobe Utility is not supported at <59 Hz.

I don't know what's version of firmware of my monitor because I can't enter service menu.

------

I edited to delete "we blame likely abnormally and randomly few freezes per minute or per 10~15 seconds of flickering issue on "DesktopBFI" app or "ShaderGlass" app with "BFI-sample" for burn-in issue". Because I got no any freeze of flickering on WinUAE emulator with BFI enabled but, minutes later... I get still burn-in again. ;)
