9800x3d pbo vs custom oc (fixed voltage)

Post by stat1x » 05 Dec 2024, 14:00

Hello, I am a competitive player in valorant and cs2, I always need the lowest input lag. Question: I have a 9800x3d, is it better to set PBO or manual oc on it? Which method will give lower input lag and best experience in fps competetive games? I always had intel and in this case fixed voltage was the best, it gave me the lowest input lag. How will it look with 9800x3d?

nothing new.
you need fixed stable clock + static voltage.
that nice new x3d can make this.

I would also consider more aggressive setting of load line calibration against VDROOP which also fixes this issue and is usually necessary at higher clocks as the static voltage + low or no LLC settings will always suffer from vdroop.
This new gen 3D ryzen shouldnt be suffering from faster silicon degradation like the 7800X3D may suffer when LLU is set to high or extreme level.

On the 9800X3D, the lowest input lag is almost always at **stock settings with a gentle undervolt (Curve Optimizer)**, not with manual OC or aggressive PBO.
Manual OC of X3D chips is limited and will mostly **worsen latency and temperatures**.
Best practice for competitive FPS:

→ PBO ON + Curve Optimizer (negative)
→ No manual OC / fixed voltage

This way you will achieve the highest boost frequencies with the lowest latency and stable temperatures.

→ PBO ON + Curve Optimizer (negative)
→ Žiadne manuálne OC / fixed voltage

Tak dosiahneš najvyššie boost frekvencie pri najnižšej latencii a stabilných teplotách.

But tuning memories can bring interesting increments vs default auto expo at 6000mhz CL30 (if you buy the more expensive kit) because at default expo, the memories have still bad timings... Even the CPU can be tuned very much, there are many youtube vids how to overclock it +500Mhz at least and get interesting performance gains. However its a bit nuclear science, there are way more parameters to tune up than setting a negative curve and forget.
