gsync is completely fucked

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

gsync is completely fucked

Post by wowcars » 13 Mar 2026, 19:41

after a LOT of experiments, I have came to the conclusion that gsync is too buggy to be usable and causes stuttering, ESPEICALLY when mixed with frame gen.

yesterday night I was pulling my hair wondering why my games stutter specifically when gsync is on, yet run perfectly fine when refresh rate is fixed, and after a lot of experiments and research I stumbled on a post that mentioned that DLSS framegen causes them stuttering, so I was like 'sure why not' and turned on FSR frame gen and holy shit it immediately became butter smooth, and I know its specifically DLSS frame gen + gsync because FSR frame gen + gsync runs perfectly smooth (even though I have a nvidia gpu) in resident evil requiem

now you might wonder 'well this is a frame gen issue, not a gsync issue,' and thats exactly what I thought as well, until I tried call of duty black ops 7 and to my surprise the gsync stutters happen regardless if frame gen is on or off, regardless if it's DLSS or FSR frame gen, and again just like last time it runs perfectly smooth when refresh rate is fixed. the same thing can be observed with monster hunter wilds, no gsync is smooth, but gsync specifically causes stutters

after some more experimenting with settings I opened my monitor's OSD and checked the refresh rate, I noticed that the refresh rate keeps freaking out and jumping all over the place when gsync is on even when my fps is perfectly stable and unchanging, and it seems like this is specifically what causes the stuttering because it changes the refresh rate to be a lot higher than my actual fps, which is where the stuttering comes from. because of all of this I have come to the conclusion that nvidia has seriously fucked up gsync and need to fix it ASAP because this is really annoying

and yes, I did everything, 3 fps less than refresh rate framecap, everything you can imagine, trust me I have experimented with this extensively for hours, I promise you that I have probably done anything youre about to suggest to me, and lastly this has been tested on multiple monitors

It would help if you could specify the specific hardware you've used to come to this conclusion.
The "3FPS less than refresh rate" is a horrible advice.
Have you tried it on mulitple systems or on 1 system (CPU+MB+RAM)?

I'm somewhat of the belief that Frame Generation & VRR are opposites.
Namely, the former is best used with fixed refresh rate. They shouldn't be mixed together IMO.

Exact opposite for me. Without VRR, I'm never able to get anywhere near good frame pacing with FG (unless I let it hit the vsync ceiling, but then the lag gets twice as bad.)

But I agree that "-3 FPS" (or the Reflex cap) is bad advice. With FG, the only way to get really solid frame pacing is if you cap the base FPS to something it can maintain nearly 100% of the time. So don't overdo it. Once base FPS starts fluctuating, FG kills your frame pacing.

yes, and i have done that specific thing, yet its still broken for me, today it seems to have fixed itself a little bit but its still not fully gone, what i was saying in that post is that the 3 fps thing one of the many things i tried

Gsync is well worth it if you use Reflex as a cap, coupled with the Reflex Boost. But the -3 fps is outdated advice. On 240Hz monitors, the refresh cap for Reflex + Boost is 224 fps, and it is buttery smooth and highly responsive.

Sadly, it's only "outdated" and/or "inadvisable" now because consistent frametime performance, on average, tends to be less achievable on modern systems, games, and higher refresh rates than when the G-SYNC 101 article was written, which is why I have it as a minimum starting point in the recommendations.

At the time, with module-level G-SYNC (before the advent and ubiquity of G-SYNC Compatible FreeSync) and a framerate limiter like RTSS, 3 frames below the physical refresh rate, even at 240Hz on a decently tuned system in the average game, was more viable than not.

Now, not always so much, which is obviously not a good thing.

I still maintain that 3 frames below the physical refresh rate is a decent starting point, but the actual required limit is going to depend on achievable frametime performance, which is going to vary from system to system and game to game, hence why Nvidia's auto limiting ratios are probably, in part, so "generous," especially at the higher physical refresh rates.

guys like I said, the 3 fps below refresh rate is only ONE of the things i tried, I tried many different things, and I have already tried everything mentioned here

Again, recommendation is a minimum 3 frames below, which is not always enough nowadays, especially at higher refresh rates with less stable framerate limiters, and VRR is entirely at the mercy of frametime performance; the worse the frametime performance is, the less VRR can compensate.

I.E. frametime performance affects VRR, not the other way around, and how well FG performs with VRR will vary by system/game.

As for the monitor OSD meter, it's notoriously unreliable, and not a metric that should be included in your troubleshooting. It's approximated, slow to update, includes LFC multiples, and its readings can be continually reset by frametime spikes.

VRR, even when optimally configured, is not a cure-all panacea for stutter (it can do nothing to combat system-side stutter, for instance, and will only prevent sync-related stutter), and is instead the lowest possible tear-free syncing solution available.

you see but the issue is, my frametimes are completely unchanging and stable, and its specifically turning on gsync thats make the game stutter (also the stutter does not appear as frametime spikes, like the frametimes are still perfectly stable but i can still notice very clear stuttering), and the only way to stop that stuttering is by turning off gsync and using a refresh that my fps can consistently maintain without any spikes and i can notice it being visibly MUCH smoother

You have yet to provide your monitor model, system specs, or G-SYNC settings. We don't even know what physical refresh rate you're using.
