Fixed my floaty mouse (Realtek onboard audio driver)

Post by atledass » 24 Feb 2026, 19:20

I've been struggling with bad mouse movement (floaty uncontrollable mouse) for many years, two PCs and three apartments. I've tried alot of fixes (bios settings, regedit, windows resets etc.). I've been through the placebo gauntlet and often thinking maybe I just suck.

Now I finally have a system that responds the way I remember it used to when I could play games without worrying about mouse movement. The fix was really simple and I feel like a complete idiot and probably am. This problem has been mentioned many times across alot of forums.

Realtek audio drivers. These were the drivers that windows automatically installed after fresh windows install and somehow they bug the mouse movement. All I had to do was uninstall them via DDU and restart my PC which I guess reinstalls the same drivers or an updated version. Why this worked is beyond me but it did. I'm not tech savvy at all and I know alot of you guys problems probably don't stem from this but maybe for some of you they do.

I wanted to make this post in case it could help someone struggling with this issue as I know how awful it can be. So if you have Realtek audio drivers, uninstall them and rs and maybe try the generic windows audio drivers.

Specs: i5 14700k, 4060ti, Asus tuf gaming b760 wifi plus D4.

Yes, this is a very tip of the iceberg kind of situation. I always tell people to enjoy it while it lasts and if you can recreate it without losing effect then it's a win.

well it's certainly not placebo, are you testing in cs2 or other similar fps game?
I've just built a new system so I will try tomorrow because my mouse feeling is off as it always seem with the Realtek audio driver.

By the way, I also noticed something wrong with Realtek Audio, the audio console, especially after you install it yourself, but for some reason it doesn't appear. But to hear players, you need this audio console; you can hear through half the card. I reinstalled this driver and installed a custom one, and mostly downloaded the driver from motherboard support and installed it on a clean Windows, and I always thought it wasn't the problem. At the moment, I don't know how the driver will behave, whether it will reinstall or not, but I don't want to waste time reinstalling Windows because of this. How long does the effect last? What are the results? My motherboard is an Aorus Elite Z790 AX.

wasn't expecting this to do anything especially after my latest reply to a post about Overwatch. This IMMEDIATELY helped. I had given up on OW and was back to my 57" ultrawide to just play uncompetitively but i tried this and I was hitting most of my shots as widow (versus 0 all game b/c of the desync input lag feeling). I'm gonna switch back to my 480hz oled and see how it feels! I didn't realize DDU can be used to remove the realtek driver... the only bad is the speakers don't work anymore on my laptop which is fine.

t depends on the driver. There are audio drivers that are 200 MB or more — those come with the classic Realtek control panel. The lighter ones are the newer Windows Realtek drivers (15mb)

If it doesn’t show up, use DDU, remove the Realtek driver, reboot, reinstall it, and when it asks you to restart, don’t restart immediately. You have to wait 5 minutes, then restart, and it should appear. (It was a bug it had years ago.)

okay I literally made an account to post my experience with this whole thing!

I had this issue on 2 PCs - stutters, mouse floaty, input delays, keyboard disconnecting/reconnecting then delays etc. - only thing shared between the two PCs after rebuilding new one, was monitor and my audio interface. I thought I was crazy after a year and getting a new PC.. thinking the whole floaty mouse feeling might just be me, however i went through every step using chatgpt looking at my settings recently.

I took the time to check everything since it made no sense it was happening to 2 PCs. One had 3070 and second 5080.

Through testing initially maybe i thought it was the monitor and then shifted the idea to this realtek audio issue. Ive tried uninstalling realtek audio apps but it didnt help so I used chatgpt to do better tests specifically for my setup. Turns out the issue is my audio interface + the realtek audio situation. Ive tested this on 2 DACs one was a scarlett 2 and second volt2 - basically not sure if uninstalling the realtek apps does anything but I had to check ALL audio sources. First noticed the main realtek, then nvidia audio and then the audio interface drivers. essentially windows doesnt like it when theres more than one but the MAIN issue was this RtkAudUService64. even after uninstalling realtek, and disabling nvidia audio (since im not using hdmi audio i dont need it) that realtek service is running constantly!

Basically had TWO audio systems fighting:
* Realtek motherboard audio
* Universal Audio Volt 2 USB audio
* NVIDIA HDMI audio also installed

During PC or game usage:
* CPU/game asks for low latency
* Volt 2 asks for low latency USB audio
* Realtek service wakes up/scans devices
* Windows audio stack refreshes

That can cause:
* DPC latency spikes
* USB controller delays
* input polling delays

Again I think its important to check your OWN pc setup and peripherals to really fix your issue but if nothing youve tried fixed these input delays and stutters, try checking audio systems in general and disabling services you dont need especially the realtek one. Also in game/app/windows settings if using a DAC just select it and not use windows default so it doesnt try to process accidental multi audio systems on random programs..

Hope this helps anyone out there and I can answer more questions if needed.

So how did it work out for you overall is it all gone? Did it all resolve immediately or take time ? Have you completely uninstalled all realtek drivers and services? I am asking as I too have settled on this realtek audio issue. Though in my case I think disabling the audio driver makes the issue worse and unfixable.
