Low lag vsync at 30fps

Post by edineckbeard » 06 May 2026, 00:22

This might be a stupid question but are the steps for low lag vsync in the original article from blurbusters (cant link it here :() applicable for half refresh rate vsync as well? my display, as u can tell already, is 60hz and my current setup for Crimson Desert is playing it with half refresh vsync turned on via Nvidia Profile Inspector (yes my pc is somewhat potato). My actual refresh rate to 4 deci points is 59.9992hz. So I decided to cap the game at 29.9896 (actual refresh rate/2 - 0.01) as mentioned in the article using the default async limiter in RTSS. I get around 20ms of render latency (RLAT) as shown in Nvidia overlay. Am I doing it properly or are the steps different for my setup?

And before you recommend Special K, please dont. I know they have a superior frame limiter for these scenarios but I prefer using RTSS only. Thank you!

The best is SK's latent sync, then RTSS scanline sync. Those can be used together with vsync as well.

If you can't use one of the above, your other option is:

Force 1/2 vsync in profile inspector for the game, with an RTSS front-edge sync cap set to:

true refresh rate / 2 - 0.01

Always keep in mind that the vsync cap method targets the vsync rate, not the refresh rate. If refresh rate is 59.94Hz for example, but want to target 30FPS, you force 1/2 vsync in profile inspector, reducing your vsync rate to 29.97Hz, so the cap should be 29.96FPS.

You can also instead forego the 1/2 vsync in hope for better latency, and set an RTSS front-edge sync cap of exactly half the refresh (without the "-0.01" part.) So also make sure to try that (on a 59.94Hz display for example, that would mean a cap of exactly 29.97FPS.) If that works fine for you without resulting in motion hiccups, then use that, as it's lower latency.

Before doing this, it makes things easier to use CRU to make a custom res that's EXACTLY 60hz (or whatever hz, most lcd panels can do between 49 and 74hz). Just make sure windows settings sees the exact hz you set in CRU because they don't always match -- they need to match. Maybe use a large-ish backporch, like around 46... it's the backporch size that you adjust to fix the rounding error.

Even with decent input lag, 30 fps is gonna look choppy. But I assume ya have your reasons.
