I made a virtual mouse pointer for windwos desktop that uses raw mouse input and keeps virtual mouse coordinates with sub-pixel precision. I render a 3D cone as a mouse pointer and adjust it's position to point between pixels, at the subpixel instead of a rounded integer like a 2D pointer has to.
How it works is you max out the DPI on your mouse (for mine 25,600) then set your raw count per virtual pixel to adjust the speed.
I set mine to 32 which makes it function the same as 800 DPI. 25,600/32 = 800. But makes the movement 32X as smooth.
I just made this program for myself as an experiment. It doersn't have a nice interface or anything and the raw count per pixels is hard coded to 32. Is anyone else interested in it or think it could actually be useful to people? Maybe I could polish it and add customization or just open source it if people have interest.

Neat. Not interested in it myself though, mouse pointer is already pretty smooth on a 110PPI screen

Very interesting! Subpixel mouse pointer movements are an interesting concept.sharknice wrote: ↑28 Sep 2026, 13:58I made a virtual mouse pointer for windwos desktop that uses raw mouse input and keeps virtual mouse coordinates with sub-pixel precision. One thing I would like to see is a "mouse trails" that allows displaying the last refresh cycle worth of mouse cursor positions. So for 1000Hz mouse at 100Hz, you'd display 10 mouse pointers.
Basically, I want to see all mouse coordinates between refresh cycles. So display copies of the mouse arrow that occured between refresh cycles. Like the old laptop feature, except at instantaneous timescales (all mouse coordinates that occured between refresh cycles)
TestUFO mouserate can do this (I can only give it a time, rather than a refresh cycles count)
https://testufo.com/mouserate#ghostcurs ... st-vsync=0
1. Click link
2. Click the blue area
3. Move mouse around in circles
4. Observes that mouse pointer looks like it's running on an 8000 Hz screen
Mouse Trails for 0.016s looks really nice on a 720Hz display.
So if you have the same software do both:
- Subpixel mouse
- Between-refresh mouse
Then the program becomes that much more attractive.
If you think the the "show all coordinates between refresh cycles" mouse pointer technique is a worthy idea, give me (Mark Rejhon) a callout for that idea!
