G Sync is only DRM

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

But since I have an NVIDIA GPU (780 Ti) and two DP 1.2a monitors (Dell U2414H and U2415) I decided to put this little theory to the test and installed the modded driver. As expected, did not work, no G-SYNC option.
I'd be more convinced if he'd used a maxwell GPU, instead of a 780ti, since they have DP 1.2a ouput and kepler just has 1.2?
Good point but the guy who posted the hack said it should still work with DP 1.2. Hopefully someone else can test it with a Maxwell card but at this point I'd be surprised if it works.

Well he's backtracked a little and now he's saying it's only working with some DP 1.2 monitors, but claims that it will defintely work with the freesync monitors

So he's all of a sudden going back on what he said before since people are saying it doesn't work on their monitor? Sounds suspicious. Another thing I noticed is in the video of the pendulum demo he posted he didn't do any panning in the demo. I remember if you panned in the demo with Vsync on it would create frame skips but with G-Sync it got rid of them. He should have showed this but he didn't.

There's still no peer verification of this. Until that happens, people should take this with a grain of salt.

Here's the driver.. Give it a try, it doesn't work with 3D monitors yet..

I don't have a DP monitor. What this guy needs to do, is publish the list of monitor models that he got it to work with so that people can try and verify.

Has the chief blur buster looked at this? He certainly has enough monitors to test this out. Unfortunately, I don't have any DP 1.2 monitors.

After going through that thread and looking on the Overclock.net thread that was linked it appears the hacked mod was able to make the G-Sync option show up for some users on laptops but it's still not completely clear if the G-Sync option with the hack is working properly. One user claimed it made the Pendulum Demo feel smoother but it made the screen go black every 5-10 seconds when playing BF4. Another user posted a Youtube video of the hack working on his laptop:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4iVt6LbEIE

In this video the G-Sync option does appear a little smoother than VSync and No VSync so maybe it's doing something but once again, the guy doing the video didn't do any panning with the mouse so it was hard to get a feel of how smooth the G -Sync option really was. I'm still very skeptical of this hack being legit but I think that at most it's just like the hack AMD used on the Toshiba laptops when they first showed off Freesync so even if it is able to dynamically change the refresh rate it may not be working as well at it could.

All of this makes sense in the context of eDP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#eDP
it includes a new Panel Self-Refresh (PSR) feature developed to save system power and further extend battery life in portable PC systems.[22] PSR mode allows GPU to enter power saving state in between frame updates by including framebuffer memory in the display panel controller.
The framebuffer must not be enough for high-memory frames.

Maybe this will work with FreeSync displays. The claims that all DP1.2 displays are capable of supporting this and that G-SYNC is merely a glorified DRM module seem to be erroneous, however.
