Lightboost for an arcade cabinet screen

Post by cykninja » 29 Jan 2015, 00:50

Hi guys.

I've got a ASUS VG278HE 27″1920×1080 TN 144Hz LightBoost ready to go into an arcade cabinet build and was up to the stage of getting some glass ordered to cover the monitor bezel.

I was wondering how dark does LightBoost make the screen? I will aiming to get either tinted glass or anti-reflective glass depending on how much darker the monitor output gets whilst using LightBoost.

Please let me know if you've had any experience with an arcade build and what I should be looking for in glass.

Cheers!

Yes Lightboost does darken the screen although you can keep it brighter with the lightboost 100% setting, at the cost of things being a bit more blurry.

However if you're trying to use an arcade cabinet, and games that run at 60 hz you're probably not going to get good performance unless you use 120hz lightboost with "black frame insertion", which will basically give the effect of 60 hz lightboost.

I do not know if current versions of mame support black frame insertion. There was an old beta (148 or something) that had black frame insertion but you had to disable some throttling and other options or you would get massive flickering. I have no idea about current versions.

Since most/all arcade games run at 60 fps, you may be better off grabbing a Benq Z series monitor and using 60hz blur reduction with single strobe enabled (just make sure you do NOT run it at 50hz at all).

Thanks for the reply Falkentype

I have already bought my monitor so I may be stuck with it for now. Mame 0.148 is right: http://www.blurbusters.com/software-bas ... y-in-mame/

So I'll give tinted glass a pass and try and get something as clear as possible with some anti-reflective coating.

Will let you guys know how I go :)

I'm really interested to hear how this turns out, I'm looking for a monitor for the same purpose.

Are you planning to inset your monitor a few inches behind the glass, or have it basically flush with the front?

The monitor will be quite flush with the glass. In order it will be:

Monitor > 16mm (0.629 inches) of mdf > 5mm (0.19 inches) of glass.

The current room where it will be is quite dark and it's a lowboy design. I'll be organising the glass today and will let you know how things turn out.

Just got on the forums here, and Light Boost is awesome. It is great to have the options of 10% to 100%, to use accordingly to personal preferences, and learn how the aspects of Light Boost works.

Will I be okay with this combination:

Asus VG278HE + GeForce Nvidia 560Ti + Windows 7 Pro 64bit + Mame 0.149 with black frame insertion?
