I actually only run into this rarely lately. There are only a few games that I absolutely could not fix such as Divinity 2 and Shadow Warrior.
Shadow Warrior and Hard Reset (previous game of the same creators) only work correctly at 60Hz and 120Hz. 60fps and 120fps are the only stutter-free fps for these games. Besides, Shadow Warrior is capped at 120fps even if you use a higer refresh rate. That makes me think that G-Sync at 144Hz and the game at constant 120fps should be perfectly smooth with no input lag (because the monitor will be running at 120Hz when the game runs at 120fps).
Another thing to consider is one option in the video options: Physics. It has only two values, default and ultra. At default, the game runs internally at 60fps even if FRAPS or similar programs are telling you it's running at 120fps. At ultra, 120fps work as they should. Default physics aren't good in any way. If the game drops to 90fps, it will do it at default and at ultra just the same.
About Divinity 2, I didn't try it yet with my current monitor. Maybe there's a correct refresh rate that makes the game smooth, just like 62.5Hz in Doom 3. Or maybe not
