Asus PG258Q - Can it do 180Hz ULMB

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, Turbo240, ToastyX Strobelight, etc.

Asus PG258Q - Can it do 180Hz ULMB

Post by ericl » 05 May 2017, 20:16

Hey!

I just picked up an Asus ROG PG258Q last week and I'm impressed by the smoothness of 240hz. I have been trying to get the most out of the monitor and was wondering if it was possible to trick it into running ULMB at 180hz. (Right now the limit is 144hz)

Why?

Well, at the moment, the 240hz really shines in fast paced action (mainly Overwatch these days) HOWEVER it doesn't have the absolute crispness of ULMB. I'm thinking that maybe 180hz with ULMB might be perfect so I'd like to test it out.

That said, I'm wearing of adding any input lag. Maybe I'll just try to tweak the 240hz to perfection. If there are any tweaks I can do to squeeze any extra clarity, I'd love to know!

Hacking ULMB to work at higher refreshrates can be done with Custom Resolution Utility although pretty difficult if you don't know what you're doing.

There are exact timings and limits G-Sync chips use to determine id ULMB is allowed and if the monitor will even output a signal. you can have a play with it but since i don't have a 240hz model yet i can't really tell you.

Part of the reason is NVIDIA probably thought 180Hz would have too much strobe crosstalk -- they prefer to release pre-calibrated Blur Reduction modes that look good.

The highest Hz as of May 2017 for any monitor for ULMB is 144Hz.

I dont know about that I know lightboost can be enabled by adjusting the timings if your monitor supports it. But I dont think you can enable ulmb in the same way.

Which monitors can do that?

With a basic custom resolution it can actually do upto 155hz ULMB with no issue :)

Yes, via a ULMB hack -- unusual ULMB resolutions are possible with a hack, to achieve odd ULMB strobe rates between 60Hz and slightly above max (e.g. 60Hz-155Hz ULMB range on ASUS PG258Q)

Really? How? I tried setting up a custom resolution and was unable to get anything above 144hz with ULMB.

I'll try again.
