VLC 3.0 works with HFR

Discussion about 120fps HFR as well as future Ultra HFR (240fps, 480fps and 1000fps) playing back in real time on high refresh rate displays. Bleeding edge experimentation.

VLC 3.0 works with HFR

Post by Chief Blur Buster » 11 Feb 2018, 23:14

Hello,

Just wanted to confirm the brand new VLC 3.0 does indeed work with HFR video files (120fps tested so far).

Cheers,

Try different back-ends. OpenGL should work with G-Sync. However, whether it's useful or not depends on whether you can disable the triple-buffer-like behavior that many video players use (draw the same frame repeatedly.) In mpv this is called "display sync". VLC could be using something similar.

(This is used to minimize frame skips due to missing a vblank.)

Video players definitely do need to be VRR compatible to allow it to play any framerates.

Indeed, there's no such thing as a "missed vblank" when running with variable refresh rate -- the display simply waits for your software's frame instead.

I tested new "Direct3D11" using VLC 3.0 final but... I got not always 50fps (= stutters randomly) at 50Hz. FAIL! :S I got no any stutters at Direct3D using VLC v1.1.9 and v2.2.6.

Hmmm!
You (we) should report this bug.

Has this bug been fixed for 50 Hz? And other odd refresh rates?

My new BenQ monitor doesn't cause bug but yes VLC on my old CRT monitor in the past year. I'll try newer version VLC at DirectX 11 to check if I get or not stutter (this is not equal to crosstalk).

--> LAST EDIT: On new v3.0.8, DirectX 11 doesn't work 50 fips (fields per second or frames interlaced per second) at "linear" or "bob" (deinterlace mode) and I tried to change to DirectX 9, OpenGL but these do not work yet but on v3.0.0, DX9 and OGL work 50 fips.

I wonder if this is a Microsoft issue or a VLC issue?

I think Microsoft issue - Windows 10 v1903. :)

Test - DX9 with deintrelace enabled and deinterlace mode "X":
- Win 7 SP1 - VLC 3.0.7 works 50 fips
- Win 10 v1903 - VLC same version doesn't work 50 fips
