BenQ XL2730 - need help

Post by MICk42 » 26 Apr 2018, 01:20

Hello everyone,
so after taking a look at this website I finally decided to give up my CRT (still works, BTW) and to try some of the LCD monitors with motion blur reduction. I chose to try the BenQ XL2730 for various reasons.
And, well, at first, it looked good, the UFO test was very sharp and nice.
But then I realized that this works only on the middle of the screen; at the top and the bottom of the screen, there were naughty double images. Visible even as I move windows on the desktop.
I read something about that and realized that it's normal, that the blurred area can be moved vertically, but not removed completely, and nothing can be done about it. Well. OK, fine.

But the next thing I realized was that this works only with refresh rates 100 Hz and above.
The monitor allowes only refresh rates up to 60 Hz and then 100 Hz, 120 Hz and 144 Hz. Nothing between 60 and 100 Hz.
I tried to create some custom resolutions (both using AMD driver and CRU) to enable 70, 80 and 90 Hz, but to no avail. The refresh rates below 100 Hz produce sharp DOUBLE image across the whole screen. And, for some reason, the CRU fails to add custom refresh rates above 70 Hz or so. After adding them and restarting they are just not offered.
I even tried to raise the vertical totals for 60 Hz or 70 Hz refresh rates in CRU, but it did not help either.

The situation is also the same for lower resolutions.

What causes this and can it somehow be gotten rid of? Is this a monitor model feature? Would it be better with a different one?
I don't have a gaming system that can sustain 100+ fps in games. Even the 60 fps is a problem, but it would still be much more realistic than 100 fps. Only in Minecraft with significantly reduced details settings was I able to get at 100 fps - then the movement was very nice, sharp and smooth.

I'd really appreciate any information on the topic.
Thanks in advance.

EDIT:
Tried the Strobe Utility 2.0.9 beta. The "Enable single strobe 60 Hz" text is not visible for me.

Yes, you would be better off with an XL2720Z (or XL2430T) if you wanted a smooth image below 100hz.
What is happening is, the XL2730 is DOUBLE STROBING at refresh rates lower than 100hz.
The older monitors, like XL2720Z, XL2430T, XL2420Z and XL2411z had a setting in the service menu to enable an option called "Single Strobe", which would stop that sharp double image effect, but would create noticeable backlight flicker, which some people don't like. This option was removed in all of Benq's newer monitors and no one knows why.

Oh! Thank you very much for the information, that explains everything.
And I take it that there's currently no workaround for this?
I was accustomed to playing old Amiga games in an emulator VSYNCed to 50 Hz on my old CRT monitor. I cannot imagine doing that with this setting - playing Super frog or Pinball dreams with double image...
I might want to try to get some of the older displays, but then again, they're all just FullHD (right?), while the XL2730 is QHD...

So I guess my next question is - is there currently a QHD monitor which can single-strobe at 60 Hz?

Some G-Sync monitors can do it when using a custom ULMB mode. However, ULMB is not configurable with strobe utility. So if you get too much crosstalk at 60Hz ULMB, you'll need to live with it. Also, this is not a documented mode. That means you can't be 100% sure if it will work before buying the monitor, or before finding someone else who owns the same monitor and can test and verify for you that it works. It works in my monitor, but it's an IPS QHD and 60Hz ULMB has too much crosstalk. You should look at TN monitors instead.
