Dell SG2417DG vs SG2716DG

Post by Justforcause » 31 May 2018, 11:33

Hey Guys,

are there any major differences between the panel types of these two? The only difference I see is the screen size and that S2417DG is capable of higher refresh rate 165hz (after OC).

I am debating now if any of those two would guarantee provide from your experience better image quality, less ghosting, less or none color banding etc. Or is it same as with IPS panels and I will have to go through some to get the "right" panel without any issues?

The price difference for me is 100 dollars.

I'll let someone else chime in with comparative data, but:

-- Generally, 144Hz will look similar on both.
-- 165Hz can be good extra headroom for GSYNC
-- If ULMB is a high priority, ULMB tends to be brighter on 24" panels than 27" panels. Not always, but has been a rule of thumb.
-- There is sometimes more amplified ghosting/streaking at overclocked refresh rates (e.g. 165Hz) -- not always but this can happen with IPS.
-- Newer Dell monitors have fixed some of the overdrive flaws of earlier Dell monitors

Both of the monitors use TN panels, so ULMB should perform well if you intend to use that feature. (I prefer G-Sync instead of ULMB myself most of the time.)

The 144Hz vs 165Hz thing is a non-issue. The 21Hz difference is so minor that it doesn't make a big difference. You'd need at least 180Hz in order to clearly see a difference vs 144.

As for which one to pick, I'd go for the larger one, simply because both of them are 1440p. 23.8" is IMO too small, unless you explicitly want a "retina" style display, meaning you get reduced screen space (because you have to use 150% or 200% scaling in Windows.) With a 27" display on the other hand, you can either keep using 100% scaling, or just 125% (depending on how far you like the monitor to be, or how good your eyesight is.)

A larger display and more desktop space has advantages; games just feel more "wow", and same when watching movies. And you can fit more applications on your desktop. A smaller display with higher DPI has the advantage of extremely sharp text rendering, and less visible aliasing in games.

One thing to note here: if you're upgrading from a 24" 1080, then 27" 1440p is both larger and has higher DPI. So it's going to be an upgrade in both of these things (more desktop space, larger screen, and sharper image with less aliasing.)

However, it should be noted that since these are TN monitors, 27" is going to pronounce the image quality problems of TN panels more strongly. As you probably know, TN has rather severe viewing angle issues, and on a 27" TN that is close to your head, this will result in more color and gamma shift at the bottom of the screen and at the edges.

If you want a bump in image quality, you might want to look into the IPS monitors. VA monitors might also be worth investigating. IPS and VA displays are quite a bit more expensive though, mind you. And if you've been out of the loop for a while, IPS and VA displays have now been developed that are performing excellently for gaming. Traditionally IPS/VA had pixel response issues making them not very suitable for playing games on them, but this is no longer the case.

Personally, when I went from TN to a 27" IPS, I was very pleased. I posted my impressions of it in this post.

Hello

Pcmonitor.info did a review on both.

https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-s2716dg/
https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-s2417dg/

One of the interesting findings was the smaller 24" had little to no overshoot compared to the 27" version. According to my reading of the reviews, the 24" appeared to have no static or dyanmic interlacing patterns compared to the 27".

I think if size is your thing then 27" would be good otherwise the 24" appears to have some distinct advantages as mentioned above, including better viewing angles since it's smaller and pixel density.

Thanks for your replies. I am well aware of all the reviews on both models and pluses and cons of either 24 or 27 inch displays. I was trying to find out more about which screen is more consistent when it comes to QC. I read a lot that most 24inch has pretty bad color banding as well as some 27 in some cases. However, I read that newer revisions of the models could potentialy fix these issues.
From the previous commment it seems that 24 inch would be better when it comes to overall performance as long as it does not have banding issue.
