problem with games / FPS drawdowns

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

problem with games / FPS drawdowns

Post by Kaggewas » 14 Oct 2018, 13:06

Hello everyone, I often play shooters, and sometimes in dynamic scenes there are FPS drawdowns, because I play on the monitor (ASUS PG258Q) 240hz, I’m used to that the picture is always smooth, but when the scene is very dynamic, my FPS starts to fall from 140 up to 60 fps and it becomes uncomfortable to play, tell me what to do in such cases, I already think to switch back to 60hz so as not to notice such discomfort.

Do not switch to 60Hz. Use 240Hz, enable G-Sync, and use an FPS limiter to cap your frame rate to 60 if you want to. Or 80. Or whatever you want that makes the game feel better on average.

If the game has a built-in FPS limiter, use that. If not, use RTSS.

It is 60Hz, but the monitor will display each frame at the speed of 240Hz. That means 60FPS at 240Hz when using G-Sync is better (lower input lag) compared to 60FPS at 60Hz.

When using G-Sync, it's best to use the highest refresh rate the monitor supports. You can then use an FPS limiter to cap your frame rate to whatever you want. You can cap to 70FPS, 80FPS, it's up to you. It depends on the game. If the game runs at about 90FPS on average, then you can cap to 90FPS. If the game runs at 180FPS on average, you can cap to 180FPS.

"60" is not a magic number. You can use any FPS limit you want. 60, 65, 90... There is nothing special about "60". If a game runs good, you can set a higher cap.
and which settings are better to set in Control Panel ?
The only relevant settings in the control panel are:

Maximum pre-rendered frames: 1
Vertical Sync: Can be OFF, but if you get tearing, then set to ON.

It seems you have your resolution scale too high. I think native resolution is achieved with a render scale of 42%. Have you tried that?

In the console, enter:

render.drawscreeninfo 1

This will show the resolution the game is using. If you set resolution scale to 42%, you should get your native resolution, and FPS should be higher.

I tried to set the value to 42% in render scale and there was so awful that I didn't see anything

Well, if you use 100% scale, that pretty much means you're running the game at 4K or so, right? That's too much for a GTX 1070. You will get FPS drops.

Try 70% maybe?
