Yes Notty you should get rid of Asus XG258Q immediately and continue using the best monitor Viewsonic XG2402 of course.Dont think another second and do it.
Re: Poll- What is your prefered monitor size for FPS gaming?
The thing is that the more I put the monitor away from my eyes, the smaller the crosshair is, the smaller the dots on the maps are, etc etc and it starts to be really far away. I might research on this subject but I suspect that using a bigger screen at a big distance might not be exactly like using a smaller one closer to the eyes, the perception is different I think.
However I followed your advice and I moved my desk a bit from the wall and could place the monitor even further away. Let´s see how it goes this way. Thank you guys for the replies.
Btw I use contact lens yes, and I´m a bit sensitive to a lot of stuff, this is why I turned into a monitor enthusiast. My eyes suffer badly from:
- Flicker (30 min and my head hurts immediatly)
- Big screens (when watching football on big TVs, I start to get dizzy fast, same with monitors bigger than 24 inches on a desk)
- 60hz refresh rate, even reading websites or daily tasks, I always had problems with this refresh rate and this is why I overclock monitors since forever and this is why I would use a 144hz/240hz monitor even if I didn´t game at all

The objective sizes are exactly the same. But when your eyesight is not that good and you have issues focusing on distant objects (nearsightedness), then a larger monitor that's further away is more difficult to see than a smaller one that's near you. And it's the exact opposite if you have farsightedness. A larger monitor further away will be easier to see.Notty_PT wrote:The thing is that the more I put the monitor away from my eyes, the smaller the crosshair is, the smaller the dots on the maps are, etc etc and it starts to be really far away. Currently using 24" but sometimes I miss the 27" XB271HU I had a few monitors back as it was great for games other than fps.
Re: Poll- What is your prefered monitor size for FPS gaming?
Ok so I was debating this with some people and I finally found why using the monitor further away from the eyes is not exactly the same as using a smaller monitor closer to your eyes. I will try to explain it as best as I can. Looking at this image:

So what your eyes will see when you are looking at the monitor is:
- Your keyboard
- A bit of your table (distance between monitor and keyboard)
- The monitor image itself
When you use, let´s say a 21,5 inch or 23 inch monitor, you have a lower viewing distance right? So effectively you will see less of your table, because the monitor is closer to the keyboard now.
If you use a 27 inch you will put it farther away, and altho the objective sizes are the same as a smaller screen, if you respect the maths behind the viewing distance, you will see way more of your table (remember the distance between your keyboard and your monitor).
So in fact, your eyes are dealing with more information, even tho everything on the monitor seems the same size because you have a higher viewing distance, you are now dealing with the surroundings of the monitor aswell because it is further away.
And this might explain why even when I put my monitor further away it still doesn´t deliver me the exact same experience as using a smaller screen, wich I use closer to the keyboard, so my eyes are basically only seeing the keyboard and the monitor itself.
So using a big monitor further away from the eyes is not exactly like using a smaller one closer to the eyes! This variable changes it.
Another trick I tried for some time, and wich RealNC and Chief reccomended (thanks a lot) was using a custom resolution without any scaling, so inducing black bars around the image. This works! You can turn a 25 inch screen on a 23 one, but the problem is that so far every monitor I tested with a custom resolution without scaling it, ended up being wayyy slower input lag wise.

Re: Poll- What is your prefered monitor size for FPS gaming?
I don't agree. I can focus on the monitor image and abstract myself from the rest.Notty_PT wrote:So in fact, your eyes are dealing with more information, even tho everything on the monitor seems the same size because you have a higher viewing distance, you are now dealing with the surroundings of the monitor aswell because it is further away.
I can see alot of my table and everything around it but since nothing is moving except the monitor image, I never really see anything that is not on the monitor.
Just so you see, I have a gameclock on the game I play and usually i'm so focused on the game map, I always forget to look at it to count items time.
Re: Poll- What is your prefered monitor size for FPS gaming?
But your table is still on your field of view, get what I mean? Is not exactly the same as only having the monitor on your fov. I understand you don´t focus on it, I don´t either, but it is there,

Maybe the whole thing in.
Light from a monitor that is further away from you takes more time to reach you. As a result, the farther from you is the monitor, the higher the input lag.
Now you can never sleep peacefully .

That´s exactly it! Great example, thanks for the image editing
Now you can see how when you have the monitor closer to you, your eyes have to deal with way less information, so is never exactly the same as using a bigger monitor further away!
I also made a personal research with Quake pro players mainly and most agreed that smaller screens provide better aim. The thing is that almost every pro player is sponsored and they use that the brands want them to use. Also right now as for 240hz options, 99% are 25 inches and players are "forced" to use that size, even tho they prefer smaller screens.
I am sure that once smaller 240hz screens appear, players will start using them.

You are a wonderful example of a man who upholds his faith. Almost a cleric. Unfortunately, most heretics believe in geometry and optics more. I have to confess that I am powerless.as powerless messages of other users.Notty_PT wrote:That´s exactly it! Great example, thanks for the image editing

The fact is that this group of people sits in tension for 6-12 hours a day and already has vision problems.Notty_PT wrote: I also made a personal research with Quake pro players mainly and most agreed that smaller screens provide better aim. If only the monitor is complete with glasses for the average consumer with good eyesight. Which will give the opportunity to focus at a closer distance. A kind of collusion manufacturers of monitors and manufacturers of glasses.Notty_PT wrote: I am sure that once smaller 240hz screens appear, players will start using them.
