240hz monitors not sharp like 144hz?

Post by plshelpme » 10 Sep 2019, 20:16

Hello. I've been a long time lurker here. I've noticed this issue for a while, and I had a friend today that brought this up to my attention today as well.

So I have had an AW2518HF for almost a year now. It has been great. 240hz is so smooth, and the colors are great. However, the image is not sharp compared to my 144hz AOC G2460PF. I did research and the closest thing I found related to this issue was this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3758. However, I couldn't find any concrete answers.

I switched back to my 144hz, and because I was so used to 240hz, it was definitely not as smooth. However, enemies in Siege were exponentially brighter and clear. They were so much easier to distinguish. Even outside of games and in regular Windows browsing, the image of the 240hz is noticeably fuzzier. It's not a deal breaker, but it's enough of a deal breaker when I'm playing competitive shooters. Is my monitor defective, or are 240hz monitors just like this?

My friend is a professional FPS player that just bought a PG258Q, and he noticed it was not as sharp either.

Yep, definitely noticed the same thing. Got 3 240hz monitor, all the same. (PG258Q, XL2546 and AW2518h)

On all of them it was harder for me to spot ennemy in Siege than on my previous vg248q.

Like you, tried to go back to 144Hz but it's definitely less smoother.

Well i sure would like to know more about this. I'm on the verge of selling mine Asus PG278QR to buy HP X 25F but if that's the case in all 240hz i'll stay where i am.

Maybe you should try 165hz monitor instead next time if you dont like sharpness of 240hz or smoothness of 144hz. :D

The PG278QR is still one of the best monitors out there. I recommend keeping it.

Thank you for the input, i bought the monitor in the past also based in your review. I think it's a great monitor for what it is but i'm not coping with the 27" considering the distance i have to be to the monitor on mine desk, and anyway looking back, playing (mostly) shooters, the experience was much more confortable in a 24" monitor and that's the reason why i'm looking for one these new 240hz monitor.

In the nvidia panel, there's an "adjust desktop size and position" option. You can use that to get a 24" image from your 27" display.

Yes I find the same problem, the monitor isn't sharp enough. Usually turning off AA to make the edges all jagged helps but then the game looks terrible!

I've not tried it yet but this is the answer to your problem..

AMD already have their own out..
