144hz (on MBR) vs 240hz (off MBR)

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, Turbo240, ToastyX Strobelight, etc.

144hz (on MBR) vs 240hz (off MBR)

Post by Alisson Cabrini » 11 Oct 2019, 09:17

- What is the best?

- I'm in doubt between Alienware Aw2518HF 240hz no MBR or any 144hz with MBR

For competitive FPS game (Apex legends)

- I have difficulty locating enemies on the screen. Would MBR help?

*Sorry my bad english

I can add 2 cents from myself as an owner of PG258Q and active player of Apex.

-in MBR mode enabled at 144 Hz the image is very clear with little amount of crosstalks. But the main problem with MBR is that u need to use it with VSYNC ON to have perfectly smooth experience. Unfortunately input lag in such case is very noticable (especially on competetive level when every milisecond matters). There are some methods to reduce input lag like limit fps with RTSS but then u will have sttutering time to time - its very anoying , i cant play with it. Other method is Scanline Sync in RTSS which eliminate input lag but You will have tearing on more demanding locations (on 1080ti with everything on low its not so rare) so its not acceptable for me aswell. To enjoy MBR i need to use VSYNC on without any of the above methods. But for fps competetive game VSYNC is a big no no. You can try ELMB monitor like new ASUS TUF series which have MBR and Freesync working simultaneously which means no input lag with MBR on. You would need to check some reviews if the quality of ELMB is enough for You.

-in 240Hz mode (without MBR) the responsiveness, felling of Your mouse movement is awesome but the in terms of clarity 144 Hz MBR is superior quite a lot.

or maybe You just need bigger monitor with WQHD resolution and IPS?

Thanks. I will consider that!

The VG32VQ looks like a good monitor, but it's not the kind that professional gamers use.
Ideally FHD, TN panel, 21 "~ 24".

I think the technology ELMB-Sync interesting. But putting in 1ms MPRT specifications without specifying GtG response time is a mistake.
Because it has a VA panel, the GtG response time is certainly greater than 1ms, and this goes against the sharpness concept that the monitor uses.
Am I right?

In addition, I will spend most of the time with my eyes fixed on the sights and not on the on-screen eye tracking. Resulting in lower performance for my use. would get less sharpness in the crosshairs (because of + 1ms GtG) and more sharp eye tracking (because of 1ms MPRT)

In addition to the VA panel input delay. FreeSync, G-sync, adaptive-sync also has an input delay (I can't tell why, but I read that somewhere). Even if it is little, it still exists.

For the competitive is not good

I think the best thing to do is to test an MBR monitor to see if there is much difference to me.

WQHD has input lag higher than FHD.

would force the video card to keep the framerate stable.

IPS panel is beautiful but response time (TN) is better for me

TUF Gaming VG27BQ

For MBR i think only TN panels are fast enough. You can check above monitor. TN panel with ELMB but wqhd.

I am using my benq xl2546 with 144hz strobing all the time now. Prefer this than 240Hz strobed or no, and as strobed req good gpu/cpu combo playing 240Hz with MBR is not fun. Non strobed is quite good, but I hate any kind of blur. So I stick to 144Hz. Easier to maintain proper FPS in games.

I am going for 144 hz with DyAc set to premium as well. Did you you just change the resolution to 144hz in the Nvidia Control panel or just create custom resolution? If the latter, would you be willing to give your custom resolution settings that worked the best?

Sry was busy.
CRU using I have set just Horizontal total 2080, vertical 1500,
blanking 160 420
Back porch 80 412
Sync width 32 5
Front porch 48 3
and ofc 1920 1080
+ + polarity
Refresh rate 144, gives pixel clock 449.28

Rest is in OSD, to reduce trail and smearing:
Color Temperature - RGB - 43/43/45
Color Vibrancy - 11
Strobe Intensity - 4
Strobe Area - 14
Sharpness - 1
Black Equalizer - 2
Gamma - 4
Brightness - 90
Contrast - 100
AMA - premium
DyAc - premium

RGB u may set for ur liking, or just for best picture for u. But lower values makes moving images sharper, and I think crosstalk less visible.
