The double image strobe artifact that occupies a large portion below the center in the non calibrated strobe mode of the BenQ display is a big deal.

I don't possess the display but I do know how the double image effect feels like. I can reproduce a pretty similar artifact using my CRT and feed it with frame rate = half refresh rate. And my personal opinion is that it's a bigger trade off than sample and hold motion blurring.

kinda defeats the purpose of buying such a monitor in the first place. Just my 2 cents.

ps: You should be able to find some cheaper way to upgrade your display firmware here ;)

Yeah I'll try it. Is this tool something TV repair shops would have? I could try calling some and see if they would let me use it if I bring the monitor.

There's a used/resale market: MSTAR ISP rent/buy/sell/trade. Once you're done, it's easy to resell. These units are in high demand right now, since buying these units from China costs a lot in shipping and takes quite a while to receive.

Hi Gamma,

You're pretty much me to a T in terms of what you want (with the only difference being I'm a Quakelive player, while you play CS). But both player bases that play competitively are very anal and sensitive to input lag.

I had the Eizo, and I had a pretty much flawless unit that looked GORGEOUS. However the strobed mode, although it worked great and looked incredible, had too much input lag for my liking for such games. At least coming from someone who has been playing the series since 1998. If it wasn't for the input lag, it is the ideal monitor. For some, they don't notice it, but I suspect you being a similar gamer to me, will definitely notice it.

Here is the thread where I talk about it, and my second post down mentions my experience with the input lag on this monitor. I hope it helps in case you're looking to save ordering and shipping one back!

Hello, Dash.

Have you considered using a CRT? The high-end ones combine high refresh rate, low persistence and low input lag qualities.

Hey Dash,

your post actually helped a lot, thanks! I will keep the Benq, look for a way to update it and enjoy the good deal I got. While the Eizo is intruiging it's the first of it's kind. I'm going to see how G-Sync and FreeSync develops and maybe we'll even get more options for better panels and 120hz/strobing in the future. Thanks for the help everyone!

Haste,

I actually got an FW900 set up ATM (the holy grail of gaming monitors). It's great of course, but playing on a CRT is rough on the eyes after using LCD's for a decade strong now.

It's mainly the flicker that is rough, right? At which refresh rate are you driving it? Personally I can't stand anything below 100Hz on mine.

I had a chance to get a FW900 and I blew it. I didn't insist enough with the vendor and he got rid of it, the day before I sent him my second mail. Grrrrrr. I do have a vision master pro 514 tho. It's got 140Khz max horizontal refresh. So I can drive it at 800x600 200Hz. I'm sure no strobbed lcd can come close to that, haha.
I'm just waiting for the ROG SWIFT at this point. But the waiting is long. :/

Yeah I definitely hear ya. The FW900's are definitely monitors that you have to nab if you find one in decently close proximity to pick up!

I'm driving mine at 140hz and it still bothers me haha. I started a thread about it and Mark guessed that I am "likely flicker sensitive, and might even be affected by PWM dimming too, CRT flicker, and LightBoost flicker."

Welcome to the club of flicker sensitive peeps.
I don't get the flicker induced headaches that some people experience. But I do see the flicker at higher refresh rates than most people on the internet claim they can.
When I hear that some peeps want to run their BenQ at 60Hz strobe, it makes me cringe, haha.

I hope I'll be able to handle ULMB 120Hz. If it's too flickery for desktop use, it might still be ok for playing a dark game. We'll see.
