Motion Blur problems VG27AQ

Post by Fearer » 18 Apr 2020, 13:21

Hello everyone,

i recently bought the Asus VG27AQ. Overall i really like this monitor, but i get a crosstrobe effect in the ufotest at 120hz / 144hz / 165hz with elmb-sync on (adaptive sync no difference / Radeon 5700xt).
My Friend got a TN-Panel BenQ EX3203R + 1080ti and has a crisp clear image in the ufo test.

Now we are wondering if it is a problem of ulmb /elmb or tn / ips or nvidia / amd.

and does ulmb work with an AMD card?

I hope you guys can bring us some insight, we are clueless.

It depends on how big the strobe crosstalk is. VG27AQ has a good strobe mode , but not flawless and it depends on panel lottery because otherwise i wouldn't be able to explain why there are people very satisfied with it claiming that ELMB totally eliminates motion blur without artifacts. Can you see double/image effect artifacts?

Just remember 1 thing..in order to have a strobe result similar to the TN you mentioned you need to have a monitor that has a good response time… for example if you strobe on a monitor that has slow response times GtG and bad motion handling , the ghosting would only turn into a double image artifact… if the ghosting is very little on the panel itself (wihile not strobing it) then you can have a more accurate and crisp strobed image in the UFOtest :)

So , how does your monitor perform in terms of motion handling when not strobed? How does it go with trace free 60/80 at 144/165 hz? (should be the best settings, even with overshoot errors that i don't know if u have seen )

Thanks for you input!

To be clear: we talk about ufotest motion blur! In games you can't spot as much motion blur. (with elmb-sync)
I'm absolutely no pro in the monitor game, so i just read about 1ms response time on the VG27AQ and had the impression they are more or less equal.

Bluir at 165hz:
with elmb-sync (920pixel speed): clearer image than before with a tiny bit of a ghost ufo.
without elmb-sync (920pixel speed): image is not clear, its a little blurry, no ghosting
without elmb-sync with trace free 60/80 (920pixel speed): less blurry, but not really close to elmb

i would say this is fairly accurate of what i'm seeing (imo 144hz looks a little worse on this photo)

i tried many settings from 120 - 144 -165 hz and i cant get a "perfect" image on this speed. The lower the speed the crisper the image will be. For gaming i think the image is quite good as long as you don't make fast turns.

My conclusion at this point is you have to make a choice between elmb-sync + adaptive-sync on ips panel vs ulmb/elmb on a tn panel. So i would trade some colors and adaptive sync for some reduced motion blur?

I just want to get the best possible monitor for my 500bucks, but i can't decide.

Welcome, glad to help. I'm in your same situation. I got my new monitor some weeks ago, the Aorus FI27Q from Amazon at 400euros warehouse (but perfectly assembled and no ips-glow at all) and i have to say i'm still doubtful and guess why... MOTION HANDLING! :)

I red/saw TONS of reviews of monitors and 1 thing is for sure : THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT MONITOR. Unless you want to spend more than 1000 dollars you NEED to give up on something, whether it's the response times , or colors , or contrast ratio. VG27AQ is a good monitor but i don't think that is a good solution considering its price ( 550 euros in my country and it's an 8 bit color panel , with a basic design structure, not an ergonomic one if u mind it, but beside that it has a not exciting response time and it still provides overshoot in his best overdrive modes). The only thing i was curious about was the elmb-Sync but it's not worth it if you're very sensitive (like me) to strobe crosstalk artifacts that are STILL there at any frequency.

Before going further with my advices i would recommend you to play around with CRU (custom resolution utility) following the "Appendix A: Manual Experimentation" that you can find at the bottom of the page of this link : https://blurbusters.com/faq/advanced-st ... sstalk-faq. Maybe you can reduce the crossstrobe :)

(BUT DONT GO OVER THE MAX PIXEL CLOCK of your monitor).

With that being said, what i can tell you is that you need to go on the LG's if you are sensitive about response times. LG27gl850 and 27gl83A are the only panels (at a decent price) that provide TN like response times (4 REAL ms AVG in GtG in the best overdrive mode) and great image quality at the same time, giving up on some contrast ratio and 21 Hz more you have on the VG27AQ.

Speaking about response times if you want a TN instead , there are a lot of models that you can choose .. the Omen X 27 is a good solution (3ms GtG AVG) if bought for less than 500 dollars. (real 1ms GtG is not possible without significant overshoot errors).

If you want the best strobe quality i would go on a benQ TN and save some money or considering the Viewsonic ELite series if u can find a good price.

I understand that the feature that allows u to use the Adaptive Sync and the strobe at the same time is not implemented on other monitors , but who cares if it just doesn't do its job ( or at least doesn't look like u wish ).
