Asus VG279QM Youtube Review by Hardware Unboxed

Finally we have both review from Hardware Unboxed, you can easily compare it with the MSI MAG251RX.

+ MSI MAG same review:

1080p 27" pixel density makes the ufotest looks like shit, the pixel layout looks like some weird design for the floor tiles of a bathroom.
Comparing the two strobing modes the MAG251RX looks more clear but with much more crosstalk, meanwhile the Asus looks less clear but the amount of crosstalk is surprisingly low (especially with the light green and standard green background).
I can't wait to strobe on the VG259QM, I can consistently hit 210-300fps in Overwatch and R6s and according to TFTCentral and Aperture Grille the best range for ELMB-Sync is 200-280 to prevent the overshoot caused by OD80(which apparently starts to be annoying at sub 180hz).
I want to see what tweaks I can do with SoftMCCS considering that the OSD has limited functionality, it's not the best looking 240hz IPS but it's most likely the closest to TN in terms of motion blur and strobing at 200+hz.

Someone here in the forum says that u can just sit 2 inches away from that 27 inch monitor and it will look the same as 25 inch hehe..

Cant wait for a VG259QM review. Since most people including myself seems to prefer the 25inch version of the VG279QM

the 27" version is faster FYI

but yes, my measurements are EXACTLY what hardware unboxed measured. On average, when i did my photosensor+$400 oscilloscope tests, the Asus VG279qm/VG259qm is roughly 4ms, whereas the MSI MAG251rx is 3ms g2g average.

which means the peak performance for the MSI is faster(1ms advantage is huge). Also, the MSI has way less input lag. My guess is, the overdrive tuning for the MSI is better. The overshoot is 5-8% but not noticeable, whereas the Asus has 0-1% overshoot, whcih explains why the vg279qm/vg259qm is SLOWER than the MSI

what hardware unboxed got incorrectly is the 60hz input lag for the Asus. The input lag at 60hz is 40-50ms for the asus vg279qm/vg259qm. It's horrendous and unplayable for console gaming. Ashun here elaborated it on his review. Check out aperteur grill website on his review.

whereas at 60hz, the overdrive tuning is soo good on the MSI that even at "faster", it still has minimal overshoot while keeping a 3ms g2g w/ minimal input lag. Whereas the asus, is 5ms with 40ms input lag at 60hz.

Both were so fast that my $80 budget Oscilloscope gave me inconsistent readings so I purchased another Oscilloscope off amazon that specializes in IPS/LED/LCD type monitors that is about $400. And the measurements were basically the same. 3.1 g2g average for the MSI and 3.8 for the Asus)I did 20 rise/fall with minimal error. The MSI wins in g2g average because the overdrive implementation was better implemented since they are only using 3, instead of 5 overdrive settings(asus). Then again, the whole purpose of g2g response times is to minimize motion blur and the asus has motio blur reduction while keeping adaptive sync capabilities.

umm no, the crosstalk for the asus is much more aggressive since it's locked at OD 80. The strobing for the MSI although has slight crosstalk, u won't see it at 240hz whatsoever, [EDIT by Chief Blur Busters: Disagree] but the trade off of A very sharp image on fast moving objects is slightly noticeable.

Also, if the FPS is below 200hz, elmb-sync is unplayable. Whereas if i drop the FPS to 120-144hz, strobing on the MSI is much better than strobing at 240hz(and why the hell do u even want to strobe at 240hz, the motion clarity thx to 240hz refresh is already good enough as it is).

in my opinion, strobing should be used 165hz and below. That is where the MSI's black frame insertion will shine. (along with the xg270), elmb-sync for the asus is only good at above 220hz. Strobing at very high FPS is redundant anyway and not worth the input lag disadvantage u will have.

u won't see it at 240hz whatsoever,
Please do not put such words in other people's mouths. You can say "Crosstalk is much less visible" and such like that, but a universal five-sigma "u won't see it"? Hah. Scientists/researchers don't write such absolutisms that way. I've noticed you're trying to temper your posts somewhat, but absolutisms are unscientific...

Crosstalk sensitivity and annoyance varies from person to person. Person A may not be annoyed at it, while Person B may be annoyed by it, and it varies from game to game.

For example, strobe crosstalk is WAY more noticeable in outdoor scenes on Borderlands 2 than it is during indoor Quake 3 Arena style games. By orders of magnitude.

Primary-solid-colors games (Super Mario Brothers) amplify strobe crosstalk visibility by orders of magnitude, over cluttered-noisy full scene subdued textured games. The crosstalk appears at the high-contrast boundaries, and some people are really distracted by this. This was a major problem back in the 3D glasses days, where some stuff had more crosstalk, and other stuff had less crosstalk. Strobe crosstalk behaves exactly the same way.

What's the lowest refresh rate for strobing on this (these) monitors?
Looking for 60hz strobing since I'm good at that :)

ELMB-SYNC goes multi-strobe at 60fps. You won't get your 60Hz single-strobe with the current crop of ELMB-SYNC monitors.

1.1ms for 280hz and 1.3ms for 240hz is a really quick strobe, ELMB-Sync gives you the benefit of locking your framerate like if you are normally using Freesync/Gsync, the Chief confirmed that ELMB-Sync can cause less input lag than standard strobing if you manage to cap the fps, this makes ELMB-Sync more appealing to esports entusiast that want good motion quality.

Personally I don't think strobing at 240/280hz is redundant, If my understanding is correct (Correct me if I'm wrong Chief) It may actually make 280hz better since it can counter the 41.8% succesful transition rate in the 3.57ms refresh window (1000ms/280), giving a +1.1ms of margin since strobing happens at the beginning of the cycle.

The refresh at 280hz is once every 3.57ms, the backlight strobes at the beginning of the second refresh in the 3.58-4.68ms range (the refresh is something like 1.1ms(Strobe)->2.47ms->1.1ms(Strobe)->2.47ms ...), so assuming that the first transition needed more than 3.57ms you have a 4.68ms margin of transition between the first and second frame with ELMB-Sync (and strobing in general)

I don't understand why Hardware Unboxed uses the "Percent in Window +1ms" to estimate the Window refresh %.

If my understanding of strobing is correct ELMB-Sync(and strobing in general) increases the true displayable transition % in a refresh Window:
- "Percent in Window +1.1ms" at 280hz (4.68ms window, approaching an 80% transition inside the window compared to 41.8%)
- "Percent in Window +1.3ms" at 240hz (with a wider 4.17ms+1.3ms= 5.47ms window, approaching 95-100% transition inside the window)
