Still no performance review on VG259QM?

Post by Quarksie » 26 Jul 2020, 00:38

Hello,

I am new and just purchased a VG259QM upon different readings on this forum and other reviews but... of the 27' VG279QM. My problem is: I can't find any complete review of the VG259QM by itself to compare performance with the 27'.

I am currently happy with my unit but it feels like the real specs are hidden as long as I don't find a full review like for the VG279QM and I find 24.5' pleasant but if pre-/post- calibration as well as 80%, response time and input lag are worse I might (or not, trully we are only spoiled with the technology push nowadays) return my unit and get the 27'.

btw my firmware version is MCM105 ( I don't know if it plays a role anyhow), I would be thankfull if you could point me towards a respectable review of this monitor version of the QM's.

According to TFT Central, it should be the same but for the panel size:
https://www.tftcentral.co.uk/blog/asus- ... elmb-sync/
Basically all the specs are the same as the 27″ model, just on a slightly smaller screen.
The rest will be down to physical panel variance from unit of unit for the same model, as per usual.

It's like saying all 1ms panels are the same. Ther will most definitely be differences in g2g times and input lag between 27" and 25".

Rtings purchased a VG259QM so hopefully it will get reviewed in a few weeks...

Just relaying what I could find from one of the more reputable monitor reviewers.

Of course there will be differences between the two, but there's going to be differences between two 27" units of the same model.

Panel variance is simply unavoidable, even for panels of the same model and size, unfortunately. This goes for uniformity, backlight bleed, peak brightness, out-of-box calibration, and yes, sometimes even GtG, even if it's usually to a lesser extent.

Question is, will the differences between the 24.5" and 27" variant exceed average panel variance thresholds. Now that rtings plans to review it, we should have an answer sooner than later.

That's great news! Thank you @jorimt and @PixelDuck87 for your answers.

I still have a good couple of weeks before end of return-window ends.

I was at first in disgust when I saw the performance of the monitor on 280Hz with OD100 but as it the first 240Hz(+) I own I mainly just discovered the world of panel-technology behind it and what too much electricity can do to magnetic resonance (the color distortion with the higher voltage). But I'm a casual gamer (I like to win in FPS but I'm not a pro) and as I can afford it I want color accuracy (therefore IPS)/high refresh rate/ as low response time for the smooth gaming experience and low input lag (because why not) and as long I don't put the monitor at OD100 it is a very pleasant monitor to me.

From the readings the only competitor for the price range and 24-25" size would be the MSI MAG251RX am I right? What could be that makes one changes his mind and choose one over the other if may ask?

This is completely expected and normal. The highest overdrive presets are almost never usable, and are usually only there for the manufacturer to get a pass on their 1ms GtG claim. The overshoot incurred is usually too extreme.

The most usable overdrive presets are typically those in the middle or upper middle. Higher overdrive presets don't necessarily mean better in the least. This goes for really any monitor.

Just an update: on VRR on + V-Sync on in NVCP (+/- ELMB Sync) I feel a high input lag/volatility in Games where fps drop to 60-80, I don't know if it's directly related to VRR or V-Sync or my internet connection but as this monitor is recognised for its high input lag @60Hz (abt 15 to 25ms more than the concurrence), I just wanted to mention it.

Maybe it is related to another factor, but this input lag should be only when the monitor is configured @60Hz. Which in the logic of VRR is then a fact and therefore enduce an input lag volatility that is a bit too high compared to concurrence... but at the same time then VRR with any monitor has this input lag variance going up and down all the time. I mean I tested in solo games and mutiplayer games: solo no problem, Valorant where fps > 200 most of the time is also no problem, Fortnite and COD are actually big issue because the input response not being consistent is for me a throw off.

Is there a point of using VRR when fps drops > 50% of VRR range?

Setting aside this particular monitor's input lag, universally, low framerates feel worse, VRR or no VRR. This is due to each frame having a higher frametime, and each frame update being spaced further and further apart.

Anything below 85 FPS with VRR on 100Hz+ monitors tends to feel visibly more sluggish than 90+ FPS. If you don't want to lower your graphics settings, the only way to avoid this sensation is to cap your FPS at your 99% achievable average, and acclimate to the lower framerate (i.e. a constant 60 FPS looks and feels a lot smoother than a fluctuating 60-120 FPS, as there's no contrast to compare the two in real-time), or lower your setting so that you're able to maintain a more consistent 85-240 FPS, or, for the most consistency at the highest possible framerate, lower your settings and cap your FPS to your 99% achievable average.

True, I played some PS4 and the aliasing bothered me more than the FPS

Could someone help me with those bit of data in the following:

I want an IPS for color accuracy, as for TNs I guess I would have to wait until september for the new BenQ)
Price in EU are same as of right now for 27"Asus, 25"Asus or 25"MSI (the Acer Predator XB273X is slightly too big for me, also more expensive, and specs just equal if not worse in certain aspect)

Asus VG259QM (admitting same tech as VG279QM)

Pros

-240 to 280Hz with huge VT (room to overclock)
-280hz OD100 is among or definitly the fastest response time on the market as for now
-IPS tech and good colors (both pre- and post- cal)
-lowest input lag on the market (Rtings)

Cons

- not fastest response time on the market due IPS tech & pixel transition @280hz OD80~75-100% in window
@240hz OD80~95%
@240hz OD60~50%
@200hz OD60~88%
- while OD80 adds overshoot which should forces variable OD to be implemented (ELMB-Sync weirdly features an auto-managed OD, no other possibility for variable OD without strobing feature):
>200hz we want OD80
<200hz we want OD60
when they actually should permitted an auto-managed OD settings or just should have implemented a better OD90 something faster than OD80 but with less overshoot than OD100.

MSI MAG251RX
in comparaison to Asus VG259QM/VG279QM

Pros

-fast response @ODfaster but only with one OD setting, OD faster (100 in window acc. to HU)
-fastest @60hz
-According to Hardware Unb it has lower input lag VG279QM by ~0,7ms
-good contrast ratio/colors 240hz
-anti blur tech sligthly more performant than Asus

Cons

-suffer from same lack of VOD(variable overdrive), which makes OD faster than unusable at lower RR
because of the overshoot it introduces @lower RR, and other OD settings just not fast enough for 240hz
