MSI MAG251RX Received - Yellow stains in middle of screen

Post by purplew » 15 Aug 2020, 06:51

I received my MAG251RX but unfortunately when viewing a completely white screen, there are yellow stains (?) near the middle of the screen, whites are only whites when not viewing the middle. It bothers me a lot for the price I paid for this product.

Here are the zones where it looks yellow

Should I ask for a replacement? It seems like too much trouble to ask for a replacement, because everything else works perfect, I also checked back light bleeding and there is almost none.

That's actually very common, at least from my unlucky experience. Uneven backlight, bad panel uniformity. I would surely return it and order another unit or ask for a replacement, I can't stand this, once I replaced XB271HU three times because of such "stains", 3 out of 4 units had them. My VG279QM also had this issue. Some of my other displays had different defects, like slightly bluish and dimmer parts of the screen (Predator XB273 X), even my current MAG251RX has it, some bluish tint on the left side, vertically, and the top part, near upper boarder (horizontally) is dimmer than the rest to some extent. When I finish my tests and choose the winner, I will replace it till I'm satisfied (if need be) :D Especially these are not cheap displays, my acceptance for defects shrinks dramatically.

I forgot to mention that too, the very top part (where your userbar/tabs are in Chrome/firefox if you're in fullscreen mode) is much dimmer than the rest of the screen too, almost as if there's only 50% of light going through that area

I fear of returning it as it's no longer in stock on amazon in my country, oh well, it's not THAT noticeable when gaming or even when browsing forums as long as it's not against a white background..

It's your choice, of course. I would definitely not keep a monitor with this kind of defect, not in this price range. MAG251RX costs 2049 PLN in Poland, so that's quite expensive. Just for comparison, ASUS TUF VG259QM costs only 1539 PLN (VG279QM costs 1699 PLN), while Acer Predator XB273 X is pretty damn expensive at 2499 PLN, but monitors with G-SYNC modules are always significantly more costly. So, in this price range I expect my panel to be free of uneven backlight.

Currently 1 USD = 3,71 PLN

Be ready to replace it many times, you may get one with worst problems, that's just how IPS(and others to a lesser effect) is.

True. I already mentioned that above: 3 out of 4 units of Predator XB271HU that I ordered had uneven backlight (orange stains). Some other models I tested also had problems with backlight uniformity. It's a lottery, indeed.

Update: I checked for bad pixels and turns out my MAG251RX has a few stuck, bright pixels, best visible on darker background. That's pretty disappointing. Check your unit for bad pixels.

I would never accept a monitor with piss stain marks on a white background.
