Alienware AW2518HF, is my Freesync / AdaptiveSync working correctly?

Post by Caronizeeee » 08 Sep 2020, 14:52

Hello guys, I apologize for my English, I'm from Brazil. I have a question regarding the operation of Freesync (compatible gsync) on my monitor, I have an RTX 2070 card. What I find strange is a way that it oscillates too much, even when I nail it in a fixed FPS, it keeps oscillating a lot. I made some videos to illustrate this, using the monitor's "Frame Rate" mode, which shows how Freesync works, along with the game's FPS running to the right of the videos. Get into a troubled Fortnite mode, where there are a lot of players and buildings nearby in a small location on the map, showing the FPS fluctuating a lot, and after that I spiked the FPS at 120 so that it didn't flicker, but freesync seems to continue flickering. At Fortnite, I feel that when my FPS drops from 240 to about 130 150, I feel like I'm back at 60Hz and I feel input lag, I don't know why. I'm using Freesync ON + VSYNC NVCP ON + Low Latency Mode ON + 237fps in the game.

The video has 3 parts, the first where the FPS fluctuates a lot, the second where I push at 120fps (to see how Freesync behaves) and the last part where the fps is 237 more stable and Freesync is at 240 (this is normal )?

Thank you guys

Sounds like a hardware or game problem, if you can't get constant 240 fps, then lower your graphics setting, oc your CPU etc, high fps in the 200+ need a pretty good CPU.

I have a Ryzen 7 3700x + RTX 2070 + 2x8gb 3200mhz. The game really is a problem, it is not as light as people imagine, mainly in competitive matches where there are many players alive at the end. My question is about Freesync as shown by the monitor's frame counter in the upper left corner of the screen. It oscillates a lot, even at 120 fps as I show, it keeps oscillating. This is normal?

Thx!!!

Turn off freesync, does the fps still oscillate the same? if so then it's not a Freesync issue, it's just the games fps being all over the place

It even oscillates with Freesync OFF, this is for everyone, even with I9 and 2080TI! In less crowded places the map is more stable. But my doubt is that Freesync doesn't seem to be as synchronized with the game's FPS, or is it just in my head? When I limited the FPS to 120 there in the middle of the video, Freesync was still oscillating, even with the FPS stable.

All freesync does it eliminate screen tearing, that's all. Also try another fps counter, maybe the monitor one isn't accurate.

The monitor's FPS counter on the left refers to freesync, the monitor's refresh rate varying. The one on the right is the game itself. What I find strange is how the freesync on the left oscillates in a different way than the game, it doesn't seem so synchronized with the game.

Maybe the monitor FPS counter isn't that accurate then, I'd rather use in-game or other programs instead.

I think that's it. I ended up messing with the "Service Menu" on my monitor, I changed a few things. I didn't do anything detrimental to the monitor, but I would like to reset it to factory settings. Since it is a "secret" menu, I don't know if anyone on the forum would be able to tell me how to do it. Thank you
