Is there strobing that doesn't hurt your eyes?

Post by .kernel 0x000 » 08 Oct 2020, 23:57

Last time I tried strobing it was on the 2014 ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q and it felt unusable because of how low you had to lower the brightness. I'm now seeing 240Hz monitors with strobing and wondering if the time is right for this sort of thing. How are things now?

Out of all monitors I tested, the only strobing technology I found usable was the one from Zowie, it's called Dynamic Accuracy (DyAc) and it does not impact brightness whatsoever. All other strobing techs were just too dim for me, brightness impact was significant, and I really need my display pretty bright for competitive play. I'm currently waiting for BenQ Zowie XL2546K release to test it, it's the newest model, so if you want to give Zowie XL series and their DyAc strobing a try, I'd go with this one.
Main display (TV/PC monitor): LG 42C21LA (4K 120 Hz OLED / WBE panel)
Tested displays: ASUS VG259QM/VG279QM [favourite LCD FPS display] (280 Hz IPS) • Zowie XL2546K/XL2540K/XL2546 (240 Hz TN DyAc) • Dell S3222DGM [favourite LCD display for the best blacks, contrast and panel uniformity] (165 Hz VA) • Dell Alienware AW2521HFLA (240 Hz IPS) • HP Omen X 25f (240 Hz TN) • MSI MAG251RX (240 Hz IPS) • Gigabyte M27Q (170 Hz IPS) • Acer Predator XB273X (240 Hz IPS G-SYNC) • Acer Predator XB271HU (165 Hz IPS G-SYNC) • Acer Nitro XV272UKV (170 Hz IPS) • Acer Nitro XV252QF (390 Hz IPS) • LG 27GN800 (144 Hz IPS) • LG 27GL850 (144 Hz nanoIPS) • LG 27GP850 (180 Hz nanoIPS) • Samsung Odyssey G7 (240 Hz VA)

That looks like a good model. I can't find any release info online, when does it release?

It's already released, but availability varies depending on region apparently. I contacted BenQ directly some time ago, they said XL2546K should be available in my country mid October, or at least that's what they are hoping for.

Sounds good I will wait for this. What type of fps do you need to take advantage of Dyac? I've heard for strobing you need framerate to be like 2x your refresh rate, so ie 480fps for 240Hz or then there's allot of visual anomalies like crosstalk or screen tearing. Is this the case for Dyac? I am only really concerned with CSGO when it comes to this, I play with Vsync OFF and fps_max 999
