Unhappy with all monitors - need help please

Post by scorp » 07 Oct 2020, 07:07

Hello all,

so I'm using my monitors 50/50 for office/games. Games consisting of mostly cs:go and other fps.

I'm very sensitive to hz and moving picture artifacts that others can't see. Had my brother, gf and kids tell me they can't see it, all younger than me

Coming from a Samsung Syncmaster 2233 120hz which I used for about 10 years, I went to a AOC 24G2U/BK last year. Nice colours, but the panel is way too slow for me. Not to mention the background bleeding.

Next up was an AOC AG251FG. 240hz is nice, the right direction for me, but that pixel inversion, I've never seen anything like that. And Input/reaction times didn't seem to be very fast for 240hz.

Onto new adventures, I ordered an Asus VG278QR. I can feel the good input/reaction, BUT I tried different settings for hours and can't seem to find the right ones. I can see pixel inversion in games or, depending on the settings the OVERSHOOT OF DEATH. I can also see it in the webbrowser. Basically what notty described in his posts about this monitor or the smaller equivalent.

So here I am, having tested several monitors, being unhappy with all of them.

What I need is:

- fast respond times
- minimum 144hz
- moving picture quality/clarity

What's not important:

- g-sync/freesync (I don't use it)
- colours ("TN panels are fine for me")
- brand, gimmicks, etc.
- higher resolution than fhd

Please help me, I've never been so clueless in my 25 years of computers.

Cheers

240Hz or 360Hz IPS.

The 2020-manufactured IPS have less ghosting than 2019-manufactured IPS, and now the 360Hz IPS can have less lag than TN.

Thank you for your input. The Asus VG259QM should be one of those if I'm not mistaken?

Yes:

ASUS VG259QM -- the 280Hz FreeSync (G-SYNC Comaptible) model
ASUS PG259QN -- the 360Hz G-SYNC Native model

They both have respective pros/cons, but it should be easy to universally beat your first 120Hz monitor;
(A) No visible inversion artifacts;
(B) Clearer motion than Samsung 2233rz
(C) Lower lag than Samsung 2233rz

For other choices of well-rated IPS panels, you might also want to consider the MSI Mag Optix MAG251RX or the ViewSonic XG270 (at 224Hz), both are 240Hz "1ms IPS" monitors.

All of them are 2020-era IPS panels that are directly within the TN ballpark (clarity-wise and latency-wise).

Can you elaborate why 224hz? I find myself being much more consistent at 200hz vs 280hz in terms of shot accuracy and spacial awareness on my VG259qm and I don't know why, flicks are much easier to hit and overall clarity seems better (even compared to 280hz), I'm honestly quite confused.

It’s an overdrive quirk. That specific monitor has much better overdrive at 224Hz.

I just ordered the VG259QM, the VG278QR went back today. Will let you know how I feel about it or if I'll try the MSI.

Thank you for the quick response.

Ok, so after testing the monitor for about 2 days, there's nothing I can find to criticise. Sure, it has a bit of typical background bleed, but I don't really care about that. It's fast in games, has good colours and reading/scrolling text is fine, too.

Overall it's amazing at 280hz and 120OD.

Big thanks for your recommendation and other tricks on the forum, I'm happy with it for the next couple of years.

i am using the 280hz IPS VG259QM.

good colors out of the box and i use it with vibrancegui as i like my colors to pop but i dont need accurate colors as i am not a photo/video editor.

However i am also a person who likes good aesthetics and interior design, i was actually using the vg259qm and a dell monitor for work. Didnt like how it looked physically and generally i am now using them for work more than gaming.

I have put these 2 monitors away and bought a relatively cheap ultrawide. The xiaomi surface 34 inch 144hz VA ultrawide monitor. Its very good for office work since i can split windows easily and its fairly good to use to play FPS such as csgo etc. Of course it isnt as smooth as the asus vg259qm, but tbh, for non competitive pro players, its fairly enough to have an enjoyable game too.
