Which monitor for RTX 3080

Post by forii » 21 Nov 2020, 14:36

Hello,

Im thinking about new monitor for my new setup with RTX 3080.
Im playing now on MSI MAG251RX (1080p/240hz) but as a perfectionist I starting to wonder if my monitor is enough good, it doesnt have good dark mode and in game I play there are a lot of darky areas and even with stronger mode on night vision + booster brightness in nvidia + max 100 brightness + 70 contrast.

I wonder if 240hz is needed for FPS games... and maybe If I should get some good 1440p 165hz IPS or TN maybe?

I saw samsung g7 oddyssey is best now but its too much curved for me and idk I like it.

I have 8700k now but I will upgrading my motherboard in new year because my GPU doesnt run on Pci-E x16 and only on x8 ... so thats 4% lots in fps tho.
+ i will be able to get 11900k if I will stay on 1080p, if not then I will pick 10850kF

You're asking a question nobody else can answer for you..

Of course the monitor you have is good enough and yes 240hz monitors are pretty much made for FPS games. With a 3080 you can get high settings and highframes on that monitor.

I'd only get a 1440P if you want a bigger screen for whatever reason.

Have you lowered the gamma on the monitor? My monitor is very dark but all I did was lower the gamma, put the dark boost up and put the ingame brightness up and it looks fine.

Why would you want to lower the gamma on the monitor?
Higher gamma = better vision of dark scenes.

Also I do not have gamma in my OSD settings,

Its only brightness.

I can set it in Nvidia Panel tho but still I have it default in nvidi apanel.

Dark boost I run strongest, brightness = 90, contrast 68 (because higher contrast on my monitor causes yellowish)
My monitor: msi mag251rx

I only wonder If i will be able to run 240fps on 1440p with 8700k

No its the opposite, the lower the gamma the lighter the darks.

I've never used the Nvidia setting because every monitor I've had has it built in, its worth a try though.

You don't have to hit max fps to have a monitor but like I already mentioned, unless you particularly want a bigger screen 27"+ theres no reason to get 1440p.

The PPI of 25" 1080p monitor is about 90 compared to about 108 from a 1440p 27", it depends what you want from it, unless you are just chasing numbers because 1440p is just the next screen up from 1080p.

It is not opossite, wtf man? so I should play with 0% Brightness? are u drunk?

even if I increase the gamma from 1.0 to 1.20 i can clearly see more in dark mode because its black anymore, its grey.

I'm not sure what you are confusing gamma for but the higher the gamma the darker the greys get. (I'm literally changing it on my monitor right now and its getting darker if I put it up..)

Gamma default is 2.2, you can't even put it as low as you are saying on any monitor I've had.

And I'm not sure what 0% brightness has to do with anything, you can play on 0% brightness if you want, its the output of the screen not the black levels its displaying.

You guys are talking about different "adjusters". "NVCP desktop color Gamma" has inverse effects vs in-display Gamma correction.

Ah I see, yes I'm talking about actual gamma not the Nvidia slider.
