Having trouble with the blacks in my ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q

Post by Sick_of_Blur » 18 Nov 2021, 17:06

I have noticed this issue since I brought the TV years ago, but lately am just getting tired of looking at it. It is more noticeable when watching videos than playing games. In video, areas of the screen that are dark (particularly when the video is in low lighting, but also periodically noticeable with any black objects, such as if a person is wearing black clothing) the black/dark areas are filled with annoying visual artifacts that don't go away. In games, the effect is more subtle, most noticeable in scenes of outer space, with noticeable color banding to the point wherein space doesn't even resemble space. Strangely, elements of the screen that are dark on a given web page appear normal. What could be the reason for this, and as I am particularly sick of looking at the black visual noise, what do I do to solve it?

I also have the PG279Q. I have never noticed this kind of behavior. Can you describe the visual artifacts?

The dark sections of the screen are overrun with black squares of varying sizes and shades.

The artifacts are because of video compression. Low quality encoders are not very good at encoding darkness so you'll see blockiness in dark areas.
