Vizio E701i-A3 Successfully Overclocked to 1920x1080@120hz

I just wanted to let anyone who is interested know that after reading this site, I was able to successfully overclock my Vizio E701i-A3 LCD TV to 1920x1080@120hz using CRU. I've done the frame skipping test and it passed. The system menu on the TV even shows the vertical frequency to be 1.20 (usually 60). Here is a picture of the frame skipping test:



I've also taken a screen shot of the configuration in CRU for those who have this tv and would like to set it at 120 hz.



For the next step, I would like to find a way to play 3d movies and games frame sequentially on this TV. Unfortunately, I have an ATI 7870 video card so I cannot use 3D Vision glasses, and this TV is not 3D ready so there no compatible glasses for it. I could try to invest in a DVI Sync Splitter/Active glasses kit from 3dmagic.com, but I have not heard anything about those working out well. Even without glasses, I cannot even get the ATI HD3D enabled in TriDef to test the 3D on this TV. I could also buy a new nVidia video card with 3D Vision support, but I would have to find a way to enable it on a non-supported TV.

Does anyone know if either nVidia or ATI allows for 1920x1080 120hz frame sequential?

This is good news to see!
You've successfully run your TV at true 120Hz.

NVIDIA 3D Vision is 120Hz frame sequential (60/60). It may be possible with the CRT emulation mode of 3D Vision, provided you enable the strobe mode of your Vizio.

If the Vizio is not 3D ready, it is probably not refreshing cleanly enough (refreshes bleeding into each other) to have full frames for shutter glasses.

I'm pretty sure this TV cannot produce strobe backlighting...

There goes my dream of 1080p 60/60 per eye 3D on a large screen. Too bad the refresh rate overclock did not work on my BenQ W1070 3D projector (which is native 1080p but can only do 1280x800 120hz frame sequential max). Thanks for the info though.

Confirmed that setting the display resolution to EXACTLY 119.878hz in NVIDIA Control Panel works on the M651d as well! Pretty much none of the other settings I tried worked. The image is all garbled up at 120hz and 119hz all the way down to 109hz, which only works periodically.

Add another 120hz TV to the list! And about time too. I've been stuck at 108-109hz at 1080p on the M651d since 2013.

I am using this TV primarily for PCGaming now!!!

I have been wanting to test this on my E701i-A3 as well but the lazy side of me prevented me from dl and using CRU. I wanted to find a way to do this without adding one more program to my list. I ended up doing more work in the end, but was successful and can second miraidave's results, via a different route!

I started by creating the custom resolution of 1920x1080p 120hz using the nVidia control panel. But quickly found that everytime I tried to apply the new setting, the screen would flash and the custom resolution would change back to 1920x1080p 60hz.
After much swearing and playing around in the custom resolutions page I found the trick.
****Remove the "native" resolution from the list of custom resolutions, and the TV will stop force changing to native every time.

"How to" using nVidia control panel.
1) Make sure to check the box for "enable resolutions not exposed by the display"
2) click "Create Custom Resolution.." and do exactly that.
3)uncheck the resolutions you don't want used- this is the key for it to work!!!


one more note: I did notice the picture does appear smother with the tv's settings changed to 'game mode' at 60hz when dragging windows around, but the setting makes no difference at 120hz. Is the game mode setting an example of a fake 120hz refresh??? can someone explain that?

-and i just want to say... 70" TV with 120hz refresh rate!!! woohoo!!!! Add this one to the list for sure!!!

for the frame skipping check, you want to take a picture with a camera (like real life camera). a screenshot will never show any skipping.

I also used shurcooL's refresh rate Multitool since you don't need any photograph equiptment to see the frame skipping. I wasn't sure if it worked till i tested it on my Qnix at 2560x1440 120hz. At first all was fine until my cursor brought up the Windows 8 side bar and there it was, you could see clear as day solid black rectangles that don't flash with the rest... Love that multitool!
