Asus Rog Swift - ULMB question
Asus Rog Swift - ULMB question
Hey Guys,
I am thinking about buying the Asus Rog Swift and had a few questions.
I love the fact that it has G-Sync, and in the near future I could even buy an nvidia GPU to make use of it. But as it stands, I have an AMD Radeon 5870.
I don't really play many games right now. Mainly Counter Strike, and some arcade games. Nothing very heavy on the GPU.
I don't mind turning down settings to get high FPS. I am reasonably sure I can get 120+ FPS in most games I play since most of them are not terribly demanding games.
My question is about ULMB or Strobing.
First of all, will it work with ATI cards? I know there is Tosty's app that makes lightboost work with AMD and Nvidia, but that's an earlier version of ULMB and I presume inferior in some way?
Second, is it only useful in games, or in 2d apps as well? Like browsing and scrolling?
Third, I have heard concerns about brightness on this particular monitor with ULMB enabled. Does that mean its not usable in a bright room? I do use my computer in the day with my blinds open, letting the sun through.
And a bit of a side question. I currently own a Apple Cinema HD 23 display. Bought it in 2006. Is there any way to find out if its IPS or TN? I ask because it has been an excellent monitor and never had any issues with it, while on some of the cheap TN monitors I got migraines just looking at them. I have been under the assumption it was TN with excellent viewing angles, and the reason other TN monitors were crap was simply because they were cheap. Before I spend one grand on this thing, I would like to have an idea of what to expect.

for my gsync modded vg248qe, ULMB with brightness 100 looks about as bright as normal with brightness 0, which IMO isn't dim at all. i have no idea what the swift is like though
scrolling/webbrowsing and 2D scrolling games are where ulmb/strobing helps the most. in my personal opinion, strobing isn't a big deal for 3D FPS games, but others find it to improve the experience.Second, is it only useful in games, or in 2d apps as well? Like browsing and scrolling?
depends on your preferences and how bright the room is. Honestly it's quite hard to say; probably your best bet is to see one in a store.Third, I have heard concerns about brightness on this particular monitor with ULMB enabled. Does that mean its not usable in a bright room?

This varies from past model to model. One of my four LightBoost monitors achieve equivalence to non-LigHtBoost brightness of about ~40-50%.flood wrote:for my gsync modded vg248qe, ULMB with brightness 100 looks about as bright as normal with brightness 0, which IMO isn't dim at all. i have no idea what the swift is like though

Re: Asus Rog Swift - ULMB question
good to know; is that ulmb or lightboost?
Re: Asus Rog Swift - ULMB question
Is this ULMB working only in native resolution? And what with 1:1 mapping, like half resolution (720p)?

I have lots of sun in my apartment and as long as it's not directly coming to the monitor you should be ok. I find ULMB brightness is quite ok at 90 pulse width setting.rahulahl wrote:Hey Guys,

Your Apple display should be an IPS panel. That said, TN has improved a lot over the years. I'm selling my 30" Dell IPS because I like the ASUS just fine. And a bit of a side question. I find it makes a big difference in CS:GO but I don't use it for anything elseflood wrote: scrolling/webbrowsing and 2D scrolling games are where ulmb/strobing helps the most. in my personal opinion, strobing isn't a big deal for 3D FPS games, but others find it to improve the experience.
