PG27AQN vs PG279Q bad black levels ?

Post by qersoras » 20 Feb 2023, 17:09

So i replaced my old 144hz PG279Q with the new PG27AQN 360hz both IPS 1440p , panel speed is amazing , although something is off with black levels and colors , id like to replicate my PG279Q colors as i have them side by side to compare and colors/contrast seem better on the old panel for some reason ... I am uploading some screenshots for blacklevels , as you can see on Left side is PG27AQN and first 3-4 blocks are not visible , while on the PG279Q all black levels are visible. I couldn't fix that by playing with contrast and monitor settings , any suggestions or is just how it is ? https://imgur.com/a/f82z0cm

That's how it should be. It's using a flat 2.2 gamma. Your pg279qm was probably using srgb curve. You can easely correct it, but I think flat 2.2 is better overall.

I know what i bought this monitor for , my previous "competitive" monitor was benq 240hz. For single players i use the Q90R ( Qled 120hz 65'' 4k ) . Would be nice if i could get same Contract + speed tho lol :D

The first three blocks will be visible if the gamma is closer to sRGB, and they won't be if the gamma is closer to 2.2. Both are "correct" for their own standard, it's just that sRGB comes out of black earlier.

It's basically preference, and doesn't mean there's something faulty if you can't see the first three squares. I calibrate my monitor to 2.2 gamma and I can't see the first few squares on my PG279QM either.

As for the contrast being worse on your PG279Q vs. your new PG27AQN, according to the reviews, the PG27AQN has a slightly worse contrast ratio (though this can vary from unit-to-unit, even on the same model), so that's likely what you're observing.

Lower contrast ratio = less contrast between light and dark due mainly to grayer native black levels.

Also, the white balance in your comparison image is warmer (redder) on your new monitor compared to your old monitor, which is cooler (bluer). This can be adjusted in the monitor OSD, and affects overall color perception.

Alright , although i tried to play with settings like sRGB mode or maximum gamma , and is not possible to make it show all the blocks. but is not bothering me anymore because the colors are great overall , is just these contrast test that "fail" i guess or w/e. thanks for the input mate
