How powerful a GPU required to run a new G-Sync Asus ROG Swift PG278Q at max res?

I am looking to purchase a new gaming laptop and soon, a new Asus ROG Swift PG278Q gaming monitor to take advantage of the new g-sync technology.

My question is: how powerful of a GPU do I need to run games like sc2/dota2 and a other slightly more demanding games on maxed out settings @ 2560 x 1440 resolution at 40-50fps+ (smooth frame-rates during game play).

Because I want to take advantage of g-sync and will be purchasing a gaming laptop, I will need to get a nvidia GTX 850M - GTX 880M, but because of the 1440 resolution being higher and significantly more demanding then 1080p, I assume I will need a GPU at least as powerful as a GTX 860 or above to get smooth frame-rates.

Does anybody have any experience running games at 2560 x 1440 resolution and what kind of minimum GPU requirements will be required for smooth gameplay?

Moreover, any gaming laptop recommendations are welcome. I am currently trying to decide on a new Alienware 17/18 or a ASUS ROG g750 series. thank you so much in advanced for your feedback.

Honestly with Gsync it doesnt matter so much, I have a 780Ti, which is really powerful. I'd go for the fastest mobile chip you can. They arent even on the same planet as the desktop chips.

Generally speaking, more is better in GPU terms, especially if you want to run at that resolution.

You may want to define what maxed out means...e.g., AA isn't as useful at higher resolutions and its worth cutting back on, imho

You will need at least GTX 780ti or Sli 760's and above to acheive decent frame rates.

In my experience with my new G-Sync monitor, you still need achive Min FPS in the region of 50 and above to have smooth gameplay.
Anything less and its still not smooth.

I have a GTX 780 heavily overclocked, and that just isnt enough for the 1440p resolution in many modern games (BF4,Crysis3,Watchdogs etc etc) - so a 780 Ti would be better.

Personally id wait now, the new wave of nVidia cards is out soon (end sept?)

Can anybody confirm with any degree of certainty that the new wave of nVidia cards will be out this soon (sept/oct)? Can anyone provide a link to an article, etc?

Thank you so much in advanced as this information would be invaluable to me seeing as I'm purchasing a new gaming computer soon.

More than one GPU systems will ALWAYS be problematic... and will always have SOME performance artifacts, seems a counter-logic thing to do if you are buying a gsync monitor.

I suggest a single gpu solution only.
A gtx770/gtx680 is pretty affordable and will let you enjoy all latest games on medium at good fps, which still looks very good. Not to mention that besides some 10 most demanding games, EVERYTHING else (99,99% of all pc games) will run at max @ good fps on that video card.

Or a gtx780, if you are in a spending mood. Will let you turn up the eye candy on the latest few games and still keep good fps.

Or wait for a 970 (which is between 770 and 780).
