Re: EVERYONE UPDATE TO V4 FIRMWARE IF YOU CAN!! NEW AMA MODE
Just leaving this here and hopefully will be back after turning off monitor...
Reading old flash chip contents... done.
Erasing and writing flash chip... Erase/write done.
Verifying flash... VERIFIED.
hmm, monitor not turning off.
Rebooted and now it's blank. Turned off power to the monitor and the eye-care screen comes up but afterwards it's just dark and the buttons don't work. So I don't recommend trying it on a 2411XL.
Are there methods to recover this as it's basically blank, how do I go about flashing the backup?

Damn, that was my biggest fear.error-id10t wrote:it's just dark and the buttons don't work.
I guess installing the XL2411Z V2 firmware again should recover it. But this time you need a second monitor to see what you're doing.error-id10t wrote:Are there methods to recover this as it's basically blank, how do I go about flashing the backup?

Re: EVERYONE UPDATE TO V4 FIRMWARE IF YOU CAN!! NEW AMA MODE
I think it's recoverable, just needs some work and a nights rest first.
I plugged it into wife's laptop expecting nothing special via HDMI, it was dark as expected. Then suddenly it came alive for no good reason. Rebooted, same story.. dark and then suddenly it comes alive (buttons still don't work).
Problem is that this laptop has AMD card so cannot see any VGA there, I'll pop-it into my work laptop which uses iGPU and "hopefully" it'll be recoverable from there.

It's alive! Couldn't just leave the poor fellow there.. plugged in my XL2410T, switched cables around and ran the backup.bin. All running as previously.
Long story short; we need an actual XL2411Z V4 firmware

Re: EVERYONE UPDATE TO V4 FIRMWARE IF YOU CAN!! NEW AMA MODE
Yeah I knew it would be recoverable. But it's disappointing that it doesn't work
It's probably crashing due to the I/O differences; since the 2420Z has an extra HDMI #2 port and a DP port and the 2411Z doesn't.
There's erase proof blocks in the firmware (sorta similar to the 'boot block' on many motherboard bioses) so you can recover from stuff like that.
Someone in the Linux thread forgot to merge the 800k byte firmware with the 2mb dummy firmware (that's created in two command lines) and they flashed the 2 MB firmware that was filled with all FF hex (255) dummy bytes. They still were able to recover, then they merged the firmware and flashed the correct one and they were good to go.

Re: EVERYONE UPDATE TO V4 FIRMWARE IF YOU CAN!! NEW AMA MODE
Hey man, thanks for taking the risk and testing! Shame it's not compatible. Hopefully the XL2411 firmware will be dumped soon. An email to Benq confirmed that the v4 is available for XL2411, they just didn't give any more than that.error-id10t wrote:It's alive! Re: EVERYONE UPDATE TO V4 FIRMWARE IF YOU CAN!! NEW AMA MODE
Any news regarding V4 firmware for XL2411Z? They replied in an email that it's available but they didn't say
whether they will release it?? Would be nice to test this firmware.

Re: EVERYONE UPDATE TO V4 FIRMWARE IF YOU CAN!! NEW AMA MODE
Hey guys,
Managed to flash to v4 on my XL2411Z using a mstar device.

Is there improvements with 2411Z? Or was that just on the 2720z? I'm not seeing a difference between this and v2... unless there's something I need to do on top of the strobe utility? Would appreciate any help I'm not very knowledgeable with this sort of stuff.

Re: EVERYONE UPDATE TO V4 FIRMWARE IF YOU CAN!! NEW AMA MODE
Someone compared the 27 and 24" versions of V2 long ago and found the 27" had worse inverse overdrive/aggressive ghosting than the 24", side by side. Looks like V4 on the 2720Z toned down that overdrive significantly. The default overdrive setting now for high is actually decent now, and it looks like what used to be the default on V2 has been moved to the hidden premium setting on V4. (the default premium setting is too aggressive, but the hidden premium setting looks like V2's old high default now).
The new hidden high setting recalibrates the overdrive to remove all of the inverse ghosting at the expense of more normal ghosting, which can be eliminated by lowering the contrast from 43 (the correct white point) to 0-10, with 0 giving better than Lightboost levels of ghosting.
The 2420Z and 2411Z's default ama high setting might not have been changed (since again they already had less ghosting than the 27) but you can use the hidden AMA high setting to improve the overdrive even more (most noticeable at lower refresh rates), cuts back on the inverse ghosting, and then adjust contrast until you get the performance you want.
To get it, turn on blur reduction then move the AMA Setting from high, to off or premium, then back to high. Another way is to just go to AMA, press enter once so AMA high is highlighted, then press back (menu). Do not press enter again, pressing enter will do nothing since high is already selected, but for some reason, pressing the back button reselects and recalibrates it.
So try that.
