News on the ROG Swift (PG278Q)

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

Interesting about the utility/service menu stuff. Kinda a moot point for me personally though as I wouldn't be using any of those 1080p BenQ panels.

If the sweet spot is around 1ms, that means the Swift at 50% brightness (.875ms strobe) and 62cd/m2 should be fairly nice for dark room gaming.

I have found it quite interesting though that at 100% strobe/brightness on the Swift produces 123 cd/m2. That is with a 1.9ms strobe. With just a slightly longer strobe of 2.3ms, the Eizo produces over twice the luminescence. I wonder if Eizo uses better/higher quality LED's or what.

I know some high end TV's produce 500-1000 cd/m2, you would think LED's that powerful would be well suited for strobe backlit monitors. Granted though TV's like that are $3000-$5000+, considerably more than your typical computer monitor.

Isn't the Eizo Foris simply a cut down version of their $4,000 professional panel, anyway?
Have you even tried to buy one of those things for testing? Surely you could afford one and write up a review....

If you use GPU scaling, yes, I'm 100% sure you'll be able to do it.
But wouldn't this affect G-SYNC/ULMB ?

Found another article on Hexus that was posted recently.

I'm so ready to pre-order/order this monitor once it's available. :

The wait is killing me. I was really expecting to have this monitor in my hands before August, but it wort of looks like that isnt going to happen.

Ya, one of the slowest/delayed products in a long while...

Dunno, after all the reviews it seems more and more like your average TN panel. Like any of the crappy 1080p 120hz screens out there... just with higher res.

But i havent seen it in person, so dunno... but it certainly isnt worth the early adopter price, imo.

Still the Swift is in the right direction. Although im not going back to tn.

The HeXus review was probably one of the most bland compared to TFT. Practically everyone who owns an IPS monitor has said something along those lines in regards to PG278Q( I know not everyone out there, but to the people that I've discussed this monitor about, which is a lot). I get, it's not IPS. I used a 27' iMac for 2 years and those computers carried a LG IPS Panel. The colors and brightness are nothing compared to TN. Upon switching back to PC in October of last year, I decided to reuse a Samsung Sync Master from 2009 I had collecting dust. I basically stepped down from IPS and 1440p to TN and 1080p. While yes I could've gone with a QNIX Evolution II or a Catleap. I had already seen the G-Sync presentation and was sold on Variable Refresh Rate technology.

I'm not sure when the technology will catch up so that IPS can preform on par to TN in terms of G-Sync/Free-Sync, response time, LightBoost, or strobing, but for early adopters I was expecting higher than $800 prices. I've been itching for a new monitor for quite a while now and this one definitely fits the bill. I don't normally jump on new tech that fast, but I made an exception here.

This was being discussed on OCN, about ULMB being darker than lightboost, but it was also discussed directly that ULMB's strobe lengths are ALSO shorter. Here is what I had posted over there for Vega and others to clarify...(vega was asking why the strobe backlight wasn't as bright......)

:--------

I think someone needs to answer this question exactly, since neither Vega or the other poster were making it clear if apples were compared to apples or not--

Is ULMB brightness the SAME or DIFFERENT than lightboost brightness, when the SAME STROBE LENGTH IS BEING USED FOR BOTH?

Yes, ULMB's strobe length goes down to 0.250ms, while lightboost's lowest strobe length is 1.4ms (the benq motion blur reduction on Z series can go down to .333 ms and .167ms but only through the service menu, and that's too dark lowest semi usable setting is 0.5ms through the windows utility), but what happens when BOTH ULMB and lightboost are BOTH set to the same 1.4ms strobe length (or whatever is closest for ULMB?)

Is ULMB only darker because the lowest strobe length is MUCH lower than LB ? (0.250ms strobe will OF COURSE be much darker than lightboost's lowest 1.4 ms)

You can not just put both settings at 10% and expect the brightness to be the same...different strobe lengths are used for each "10%".
