and let's not underplay the improvement of SD to HD. A well mastered blu-ray is significantly better looking than a well mastered DVD.

I'd reserve judgment until you've actually seen one in person. While I haven't, there are a lot of industry insiders whose opinions I value who claim it is a remarkable revolution in image quality. I've also heard first hand from a friend in the industry who saw a dolby tech demo and was utterly blown away (this is a guy who has worked with multiple FW900s, and Dolby prm-4220's, in his mastering studio).
Don't you live in Toronto? Have you been down to the Scotiabank theater to try the Imax with Laser setup?

Last movie I saw at scotiabank in imax was interstellar. Was pretty good :)

I don't know much about theatre projection technologies - are all imax laser movies "HDR"?

I read that Toronto was one of the cities in which Star Wars 7 was shown in HDR. But not at Imax, I believe, it was at a Dolby Cinema I think. Maybe I'm wrong. I do love Imax though, but unless it's being shown on 70mm film then DCI 2K/4K doesn't contain HDR by default AFAIK. Or maybe it just started to recently. But I know that most cinema projectors can't do HDR fully, since they are way too dim (50 nits or 14 ft lamberts). You need a very good contrast ratio and much higher foot lamberts. That's why it's easier to do HDR at home, LCDs get very bright so it's a natural fit and one way to increase contrast is by increasing the peak white. The other is of course to reduce the black level (most movie theaters have very poor black levels). But even though OLED have perfect blacks, their dynamic range is going to be inferior to LCD for a while, since it's an absolute value, max - min, instead of a ratio.

Well too bad most Blu-ray have shoddy transfers
And the Blu-ray format lacks many titles that DVD has

That's what we're trying to do here, and it's pretty clear you're wasting not only our time but your own. I find your opinions ignorant and your tone reminds me of the Drunk Uncle on SNL, talking about the news. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

If you're not interested in new display technology, I have to ask why you're even posting here, aside from the obvious (trolling).
Yes I'm the one who's trolling here

Are you kidding me?
How am I being cynical here? I'm just being realistic
Claiming something is "toast/dead"(like you did with SDR and Standard Blu-ray) when it clearly is alive and doing well is downright delusional

I'm sorry that I don't buy into gimmicks like HDR...Oh wait I'm not
You need to learn to accept other people's viewpoints/opinions

Also your long essay on the benefits of HDR will have on mankind few pages earlier was quite frankly cringeworthy to the point where I legitimately thought you were a Marketer for a big company(then again maybe you are  )

I think I remember hearing that they packaged "post processing 3d" with the Imax showing of force awakens, and I hate post processed 3d so I saw it 2d in a "regular" room.

This is something I'm curious about - hateful eight was shot on 70mm film (which I assume is then transferred to digital). But when you say it's shown on 70mm film do you mean that there is an actual film projector??

Yea 14 FL is the figure I keep hearing.

Again, this is incidental. We're talking about the merits of technology here. If a blu-ray transfer is done poorly, this does not mean that HD is a gimmick.

At any point, feel free to articulate the reasons you believe HDR is a gimmick.

It's hard to say. They don't seem to want to pooh-pooh their existing Digital Imax format too much, but, from what they have here about "Hand-Crafted Re-Mastering", http://www.imax.com/content/imax-difference, I'm sure they didn't throw the Digital version up on the screen without some extra work to highlight their Laser system's contrast and color quality while they've got Dolby Vision to contend with. So they are certainly "more" HDR, if not fully so, even though they don't use the term. Still, they do use two laser projectors in tandem to create one bright image, so I thought you guys might be interested in trying one such system out for yourself.

I don't think Canada has a Dolby Vision setup proper yet: http://www.avsforum.com/laser-illuminat ... the-world/. At Imax they're showing it in 3D, so I guess you can't really call it HDR even with Laser's higher brightness and contrast. It probably looks "normal" instead of dim and washed-out as is usual.

Hateful Eight is being shown in actual 70 mm Panavision. They built and rebuilt a lot of 70 mm projectors for the roadshow. Pretty cool stuff: http://thehatefuleight.com/roadshow
