That's only useful when the internal resolution is an exact multiple, like 3840x2160 in a 1920x1080 monitor. At less resolution, like downsampling from 1440p, some pixels are missed (it's like nearest neighbor filtering, aka no filtering). You can see it if you move a window with text of 1px of thickness, like the options menu of HL2.
Indeed, I did notice that non multiples scale very badly. But I wanted an exact multiple anyway. Smoothness makes it very blurry, like the in game SSAA in tomb raider and some other games. I prefer 3840x2160, which is obviously very similar to 2x2 supersampling, which is what I was always looking for.

I've been using the hell out of DSR. At least when the game scales alright. CSGO mostly. My 780Ti can run 140fps with GSync and 4K resolution on top of 8x AA.
