G-Sync first impressions

Talk about NVIDIA G-SYNC, a variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. G-SYNC eliminates stutters, tearing, and reduces input lag. List of G-SYNC Monitors.

Well that's encouraging I guess, seems like there's a chance I'll get it working. Could you possibly post screens of your Crysis profile in NVCP?
The only things I've changed from default are maximum pre-rendered frames = 1 and forcing maximum refresh rate. I believe I also have the CCC mod installed which seems to be preventing me from loading the savegame at the Assault level that you mentioned in your Anandtech thread.

As an additional note I didn't have any issues with G-Sync in Crysis on my GTX 760 either.

DX9 or DX10?

EDIT: Looks like DX9 is my only option anyway. I was running DX9, and wondered if DX10 might make a difference, but switching to DX10 results in the old Crysis 24Hz bug, and Preferred Refresh Rate: Highest Available is completely ineffective for some reason.

Yes I've always used DX9 in Crysis. The highest video settings were artificially restricted to DX10, even though they work fine on DX9 and it will run slightly faster that way.

Damn, that's one less potential 'easy fix' (although I don't know if I could have got around the 24Hz bug anyway).

I just reset Crysis to 100% stock DX9 High settings, and there is still terrible stutter.

You don't happen to have in-game vsync on do you? It likes to turn back on when I restart the game for some reason.

I had it on the very first time I tried the game - it, and Triple Buffering in my autoexec. I thought I'd solved it, but disabling those didn't fix the stutter. I verified that V-Sync is indeed disabled by checking the game with 'Application Controlled', although I've never personally had problems with the setting reverting it'self in Crysis (not that that kind of thing would surprise me - I had lens flares do it in Crysis 3 the other day).

You're getting less than 60fps on a 780Ti, at 1080p? That doesn't sound right to me at all. What exact settings? And what CPU?

Also, I remember Crysis indeed can be very stubborn about vSync. If you've never seen the frame rate go above 60fps, don't assume that vSync is properly disabled

I'm assuming you got the 1080p idea from the link I posted, but I'm not using that monitor here. The G-Sync monitor is a 4k XB280HK. I haven't tested much because the game is unplayable due to the broken G-Sync, but it seems that at 4k the game runs at about 45-55fps, GPU bound on the 780 Ti.

If you're surprised by sub-60fps frame rates in Crysis at 1080p, then you shouldn't be. Like I said, the game has a terrible problem with CPU bottlenecks (because it can't multithread), and yes, it can drop as low as ~30fps on a 4GHz 4790k in AI/physics heavy sequences - the resolution is irrelevant.

I have seen it go above 60fps, and even if it hadn't in-game, it's pretty obvious in the menu.

I just tried Crysis Warhead and that seems to be working with G-Sync, but wow, that game is absolutely destroying the 780 Ti at 4k. I said Crysis was at ~45-55fps, well Warhead was hovering around 35fps in a similar area (I'm strictly looking at GPU bound areas here). I had to set it to High/'Gamer' to barely scrape by with 40fps. I know it's a massive res, but historically I always felt that Warhead ran easier than Crysis. Something doesn't feel right...

Anyway, if Warhead will G-Sync, then why in God's name won't Crysis do the same? This is driving me insane. The stutter isn't really stutter, it's probably better described as hitching. It comes in bursts. If I rotate 360° on the spot, about 60% of the pan will be smooth, but it's broken by patches of aggressive hitching. In the week before I got the G-Sync monitor, I was playing with 4xSGSSAA at 1080p@120Hz with V-Sync and Triple Buffering. The framerate was low (35-50 typically), and of course V-Sync+Triple Buffering at that framerate is far from ideal, but there was none of this hitching. It was as 'smooth' as could be expected and running normally.
