Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
Re: Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
Could I pay someone to do this for me?
I will happily pay $50 for assistance on Skype: are.yourealdoe

Re: Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
I tried to follow all the steps carefully but unfortunately this is my end result -
Calibrating delay loop... OK.
Info: Will try to use device /dev/i2c-1 and address 0x49.
Info: WILL reset the device at the end.
Found Macronix flash chip "MX25L1605A/MX25L1606E" (2048 kB, SPI) on mstarddc_spi.
Reading old flash chip contents... done.
Erasing and writing flash chip... Erase/write done.
Verifying flash... FAILED at 0x00000000! Expected=0x02, Found=0xb0, failed byte count from 0x00000000-0x001fffff: 0xff
Your flash chip is in an unknown state.
Please report this on IRC at chat.freenode.net (channel #flashrom) or
mail [email protected], thanks!
So, flash verification failed. Please guide me what to do now. I am just stuck, and my monitor wont turn on now. I think my monitor is dead or if there is a chance to get it back?
My monitor - Benq XL2411Z, earlier with v1 and tried upgrade to v2.
Help!

Re: Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
No worries, I finally managed to reflash it and succeed. Only change that I did from previous flashing was to shut down the output to the monitor. Somebody should have mention this in steps as important.

Re: Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
Hi, KN.
I don't know anything about Linux (besides what's already posted in these forums), but that's a strange error.
Have you tried turning off the monitor (unplugging) for 5 minutes then reflashing? It could have been a problem with the cable or a byte sent improperly...that's just a wild guess.
Try flashing the *backup* file you created (the backup should be called backup.bin I think) after doing the power off and on to reset the monitor A/C power.
This should fully restore the original firmware and then you can flash again.
Also a user on overclock.net temporarily "Bricked' his monitor a few days ago by flashing the 0-byted "dummy" 2 MB file into it, without merging it with the 832k'ish raw v4 firmware (the firmware must be 2 MB in size for flashrom to flash it, that's why the 832 MB raw file must be merged with the 2MB dummy file). he easily reflashed it since a 'bad' flash like this only bricks the DDC channel; the i2c bus (49) is left intact. He first flashed the original backup file he made, then this time he flashed it without leaving out the merging commands.

Re: Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
I do not have the original backup
I first tried flashing on my laptop, and i got the error, and when i tried again, i wouldn't work, and i had a bricked monitor. I then tried it again on another laptop and everything seemed to be working, but then again at the end, i got the same error. The monitor still shows up when i i2cdetect it, after i disconnect and reconnect the power from it. When i think about it i might have also done the stupid mistake of flashing the dummy, but i have tried flashing correctly after that without succsess

Re: Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
Now i tried updating to v2 instead of v4 and it worked

Re: Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
Now try V4 again.
It should flash successfully this time.
Just don't forget the merge commands!!!!
Remember to follow my commands I wrote a few pages back, word for word, only changing what "bus" ID the monitor is on.
BTW WE NEED GUINEA PIGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we need someone to test cross-flashing an XL2720Z v4 firmware into an XL2420Z (XL2411Z is already proven not to work; you can't even flash an XL2420Z f/w into an XL2411Z) to see if the new AMA mode (AMA low) toggle will work. if there's an EDID error where the monitor isn't identified correctly you can try flashing back.
(THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK ONLY DO IT IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE!)

Re: Firmware upgrade using Linux tool, requires no hardware
I am currently flashing v4, but it seems to be taking a lot longer than v2
Hopefully it will work without issues

edit
It worked! Finally, after about 10 hours of stressing I have a functional monitor with the newest firmware
