question about display & mouse lag correlation

Post by b0t » 01 Oct 2023, 09:11

hello fellas,

CS2 is officially out for a few days now, and I just got my XL2566K monitor and the mouse I use is the DAv3 (wired non-Pro version).

in order to fully unveil the potential of my gear and get the minimum latency, what dpi and polling rate should I set for 360hz in cs2 ?

(I played 400dpi/1000hz in csgo on 240hz before) - but I read somewhere on the forum that going over 1khz polling rate is trully beneficial only when playing on 360hz

so how much should I set it to ? assuming 1600dpi is too difficult for me to use outside the game, also I know that 8khz didn't work well in CS:GO ..

will 800dpi @ 2000/4000hz be enough ?

**and also, wanted to ask about how much of a toll will it take on the CPU exactly if I raise it from 1k to 2/4khz ?

according to this pic
the sweet spot would be 800 dpi since it is easier to use than 1600 and difference in latency isn't worth it anyway this is old video but i think it still applies
going over 1khz polling rate is beneficial but you need to be using updated win 11 version to get the full benefit also disable USB controller interrupt moderation to gain the max from the high polling rate.

it will take quite the toll that's why it is preferred to manually set the interrupt affinity to get the best performance possible

Let's start with the fact that for 8000Hz you need 1600dpi, ideally 3200.
This is necessary to saturate the mouse polling rate. At 800dpi, the amount of data from the mouse sensor is insufficient and the polling frequency will not exceed 3000-5000Hz.
Now let's move on to performance.
In csgo with an amd 5700x processor I got about 1200 fps on an empty card. The polling rate of 1000Hz had no effect on FPS. A polling rate of 4000Hz lowered the FPS to 950. A polling rate of 8000Hz lowered the FPS to 800. This is on an empty card, when the GPU is 100% loaded.
In a real game with FPS limited to 300 (fps_max 300) I had no problems. Perhaps I took 5-10 frames at a polling rate of 8000Hz.
I haven't tested CS2, but I know it's slightly better optimized for high-Hz mice. Anyway my GPU is now always 90-100% loaded and I can't check. I need a more powerful GPU, PTX 3080 and higher

what if I dont like Win11 and prefer to stay on Win10 Pro untill it hits EoL ??
I am forced to use 11 on my hp laptop (no drivers for win10 for some reason) and I really dont it.

Well 8000hz didn't work well in Source. I intend to use no more than 4000hz. glad to see than 800 will suffice for that.
about the toll... Isn't the CPU what suffers from high polling ? because you mentioned GPU load a couple of times here and it confuses me..

if it helps, my specs are :

i7 12700kf
g.skill trident-z ddr5 32gb 6000mhz (16x2)
rtx 4070
asus rog strix z690-f

EDIT : just read a bit about USB controller interrupt moderation, its not such an easy 1-button-press thing to do. are u sure I need it for 4000hz max in win10 ?

the reason i said to update to latest win 11 is because they done some improvements for high poling rate devices in the recent updates

Oh ok, thank you for the info. but how big is the difference exactly? enough to justify moving to 11 ? I am asking because I actually thought about making a fresh win install but again - I have 11 on my laptop and Im SERIOUSLY not fond of it.

It is a big difference for high polling rate devices

well I am about to upgrade from 3070ti to 4070 & swap ssd from 980 to 990 for system disk.. might be time to start getting used to win11 ...
