Random black screens while gaming in dual monitor setup

Post by kurtdh » 01 Jul 2024, 02:48

SETUP: 4080 Super, Secondary monitor: Predator XB271HU (1440P 165hz), Primary monitor: Predator XB273U GX (1440p 240hz)

Issue: When playing a game, I get random black screens that last for about 2 seconds. I did see a thread in this forum about black screens when gsync is enabled, and it might be similar to that same issue. The weird thing, is the possible solutions I found for my issue. If I turn off gsync, the issue is fixed. If I change my primary monitor from 10 bit color to 8 bit color, the issue is fixed. Any one of these methods actually fixes the issue, but I want to use both features. I want 10 bit with gsync. My primary monitor supports HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4. I've tried multiple DP 1.4 AND DP 2.0 cables.

Things I've tried:
- 6 different displayport cables
- Changing the scaling in nvidia drivers from display to GPU
- Using CRU to increase the lower VRR range of my primary monitor from 48hz to 50 hz, 55 hz, and 60 hz.

To me it seems like this could be DSC related somehow? But there's no way for me to disable/enable DSC on either of my monitors (that I know of), so I haven't been able to test any of that. Can anyone assist?

Try running both at 165Hz. Or whatever the highest common refresh rate is.

I will try this, but it wouldn't be a good solution for me. I spent a lot of money on this monitor to get 240hz for motion clarity amongst other things, so I wouldn't want the solution to be running at a permanent 165hz.

I'm also getting this problem and has only started recently, might be a recent driver or windows update, although i am still only on 551.86. i do have dual monitors both usually set to 120, and change my primary to 165 when playing competitive game. it happens on both refresh rates for maybe less than a second, and only happens around 3-6 times per session (which is about 2-3 hours) doesnt happen with games like elden ring which cap the fps. im more leaning to something within a windows update messing this up as ive not touched drivers for a while and pretty sure i used DDU before installing.

After doing a bunch of searching, I came across this gem of a response from jorint:
viewtopic.php?t=12420

"I was experiencing random black screens on my PG27AQN (1440p 360Hz G-SYNC native display with DSC) until I lowered my output color depth to 8-bit from 12-bit in the NVCP under "Change resolution" with the latest driver (even in single monitor mode)."

On my xb273u gx (primary monitor) I changed it from 10 bit to 8 bit and I haven't had any black screens yet. Do you think that means there's a firmware issue on a lot of these DSC monitors, or do you think it's a windows multiple monitor issue?
