WIll something like desktop bfi or retroarch's inbuilt bfi work on a monitor that doesnt have bfi. But has, say, a 240 hz max refreshrate? What are the hitches? Is it better the higher the max refresh rate?

It will work. It's better at high refresh rates in the sense that you can choose how many black frames there are. 120Hz 60FPS for example only allows one choise: 1 content frame, 1 black frame. At 240Hz, you can choose how many black frames there should be.

Drawbacks are image retention issues with LCD panels. I don't think OLED panels suffer from this, but I'm not sure. Another drawback is severe flicker when frame pacing is not maintained. If there's a frame time spike, you will see a flicker that can be very annoying.

I tried retroarch bfi on my 60 hz sony lcd. And it flickers a lot. Is this the game not being able to maintain a locked 60? Frame pacing issues?

60Hz BFI flickers a lot already. With frame pacing issues, it flickers much worse because the flicker becomes uneven.

If the display is working at 60Hz and you enable BFI in RetroArch, you're getting 30Hz flickering and not 60Hz. If I remember correctly.

Oh, oops. I missed that. Yeah, you can't expect BFI to be usable on a 60Hz display. To get 60Hz BFI, you need 120Hz.

Yep your right master rotaku. I have something called led motion mode on my tv. which is supposed to be like bfi. It is immune to ufo tests.. no optical illusions. I guess its still bfi at 60 hz tho
