Animation Time Graph Issues - Cold Boot Only
Posted: 10 Jan 2025, 07:12
Hello All,
I'm having an interesting issue which I'm not sure if anyone has seen before. When I do a cold boot I get stutters on the animation time graph and my games feel more "stuttery" (observable on MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner frametime graph). If I then reboot my PC, the animation time graph is completely smooth as well as games. This is reproducible every time I shutdown and then cold boot. I've included some screenshots of the different graphs I see.
"Boot from Shutdown - Bad Graph" shows the spikes I'm talking about (ignore the final spike that was from screenshotting). Most of the spikes there are green but sometimes they will be yellow or red and there are a quick succession of 4-8 spikes every ~10 seconds. "Restart - Good Graph" is flat, no spikes appear even after watching for 5+ minutes. Both screenshots are taken 2 minutes after logging in. I have left my PC running for an hour on a cold boot and the animation frame time graph still looks like the "Boot from Shutdown - Bad Graph" screenshot. From there I rebooted and it was flat again.
I am running a Lian Li 011D Evo case with the full 10 fans (AL120's) connected to fan hubs. For the screenshots I had L-Connect uninstalled and I have no other RGB software installed. I have also loaded up all my mouse DPI settings to the hardware for my Superlight mouse, so no G Hub or Razer software installed either. And that bloatware called Armoury Crate has been avoided at all costs.
I've since reinstalled L-Connect because I can get the same flat frametime graph as long as I stop both the services as per screenshot "LConnect Services". Another interesting interaction around cold booting is that both of those services are still stopped after a cold boot. If I reboot they both are running again, not sure if relevant or not. If I run the animation frametime graph before stopping them the graph is horrendous, but simply stopping them gets me a flat graph again like "Restart - Good Graph".
My full system specs are:
7800x3d
Asus Rog Strix 4090 OC
Asus Rog Strix x670e-e
G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MHz DDR5 CL30 AMD
Corsair AX1000 Titanium 1000W
Windows 24H2 (OS Build 26100.2605)
PS: I've unfortunately been hyper focused on stutters now because of my recent upgrade. My old system was a 5900X with a 3080. Games ran perfectly fine without any issues. I received a bonus from work which allowed me to purchase a new system, 7800x3d and 4090. The new system was experiencing very bad stutters in the same games I'd just been playing on the old system, and it turned out my RAM was faulty (Corsair Dominator, failed MEMTEST and was confirmed faulty after RMA). So now I keep freaking out like there are more issues with my system... stutters in games like Rust, PUBG and Delta Force exacerbate that paranoia.

Getting views but my post might be too long winded so:
TLDR: Animation Timing Graph shows system stutters after booting up from shutdown state (cold boot). Restarting the PC = stutters gone on animation timing graph. Why is my system stuttering from a cold boot but not after restarting?
