Headache and eyestrain after concussion/whiplash

Hello everyone,

Since a concussion 3 years ago, I have been suffering from headaches and eyestrain triggered by using screens.

The longer and more often I use screens, the worse the pain gets.

Now the pain varies in intensity and duration depending on the screen.

The best so far has been

Tolino eink display - no pain but not possible to work

HP E34m G4

when sitting at a distance of about 50 cm at work. Only curved display, runs at 60 Hz

But here too, pain or strange feelings in the head and a feeling of strain in the eyes occur after a while, but lighter and slower than with other screens

Otherwise, I have no problems using the

LG OLED65CS9LA as long as I watch series or films, but as soon as I play games on PS5 or PC, pain occurs after a while.

When using my IPHONE 13, pain also occurs after a while.

Pain occurs much more quickly on my DELL S2719DGF.

Using a 4k projector and screen - 3 meters away
Moderate headaches when gaming

It is worst with the following displays:
Acer Nitro XV340CKP
Vivo 100x pro

In general, I have tried with all displays (where possible)
- adjusting the number of Hz 60 - 144 Hz
- deactivating dithering
- using PWM-free displays
- varying the distance, at least with the cell phone

None of this feels like it makes a real difference.

Pain also occurs during use, but especially after use, i.e. particularly triggered by the change between screen and reality.

Please help me, which screen or cell phone I should try next?

Thanks in advance.
Feel free to ask questions if something is missing.

One thing I can tell you for sure is to avoid projectors, they're almost all garbage for use.

Let's disect OLED's & LCD's
Let's list out a few reviews first:
https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-s2719dgf/

https://youtu.be/Ca6VCCwBmG0?si=pHhy5Tq8GwQA2GAB&t=331 — Acer XV340CKP gamut coverage
https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/ ... pbmiipphzx

https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/hp-e34m-g4-review

https://audiovision.de/lg-oled65cs9la-test/
https://www.computerbild.de/artikel/avf ... 74593.html

Based on these reviews, we can come to these findings:
S2719DGF — (YAG phosphor, classic, narrow color gamut) W-LED
Acer XV340CKP — KSF/PFS
HP E34m G4 — KSF/PFS (maybe even QD, though I doubt it)
LG TV — WOLED very likely, unsure if WRGB (C9) or RWBG (C2), very likely the latter
Smartphone OLED's are all AMOLED, employing both PWM brightness dimming and exhibiting the side-effect of OLED's internal capacitance (display scan-out brightness dip)

Now comes the guessing part:
The e-ink display you've used lacks any backlight, hence it seems that LED backlight type potentially might have an effect on you.
This isn't anything extraordinary, as there have been reports online of this occuring.
I would avoid any displays which exhibit flicker, to be specific: all OLED panels & most Mini-LED panels.

I'd suggest you look into narrow color gamut displays with decent refresh rate & pixel density
A notable example that I personally enjoy: AOC Q24G2A
It's hard to recommend other higher resolution panels, as they're all mostly KSF/PFS or QD.
Most 1080p 240–400Hz panels are the classic W-LED backlight, so you have a decent selection there.

If you need a phone, your options of a narrow color gamut are much slimmer.
Look into 120Hz LCD phones first, such as these ones (no info on their color gamut):
- Poco X4 GT (HW AV1 decoder),
- Moto G100,
- Moto G200 / Edge S30
- Samsung A23 5G,
- Samsung XCover 6 Pro,
- Cubot Max 5 (HW AV1 decoder),
- Moto G35 (HW AV1 decoder supposedly)
- Mi 10T Pro (has ~2,4kHz PWM <60% brightness)

Keep in mind, these are just guesses.
You might even have to go back to a really old panel instead, but I don't have any SPD (spectral power distribution graphs) to tell you which ones have the old type of backlight. Western smartphone reviews are mostly vague and lack deeper analysis.
YMMV with each of these recommendations.

Thanks you so much, I will look into it asap and report the results with the recommended devices!

Hi again,

thank you!!!
I brought the Poco x4 gt and its so much better!
Bit sad that it seems link there will be no ips phones in the future but for the next years I have a capable smart Phone.

Next step would be the monitor. You've posted a 24" display. Are there by any chance bigger screens than 24" for example 32 or 34 that meet the requirements?

Thanks again!

Greetings

Here's a few examples of what you should look for, in terms of specifications.

Now that I look at this table, it seems that you also have issues with standard WLED backlight displays, so there might be more to it.
Perhaps you're sensitive to the polarizer orientation or coating of the panel more than the backlight itself.

Hope this helps.
