G-Sync question

Hello,
Does anyone know if the game resolution has to match the monitor resolution for G-Sync to work? I have a 1440p monitor and trying to play Last of Us with render scale turned on up to 140% but that somehow disable G-Sync. It only works if I play at 100% render scale (1440p or native).
