Why do online games sometimes run great and other times extremely poorly?

Hi everyone,
I’d like to start a discussion and share some thoughts I’ve gathered over the years while chasing smooth gameplay. I’m curious to hear your opinions as well.

Why do online games sometimes run amazingly well, and other times extremely poorly?
One match — 350+ FPS, super smooth gameplay, perfect hit‑reg.
Next match on the exact same map — drops to 200 FPS, sometimes it feels like I’m playing on a 60 Hz monitor, and the hit‑reg is completely off.
Some days everything runs flawlessly from morning to evening, and other days it’s a complete lottery.

Isn’t it possible that the issue isn’t our hardware at all, but rather our ISP or the specific server we connect to? Even with zero packet loss, stable ping, and low jitter, there are still matches where the game simply refuses to run well.
Are modern game servers more client‑based compared to the old days when everything was server‑based?
I remember early CSGO — the game felt consistently great from day one. Then a patch came out that shifted things toward a more client‑based model, and from that moment the game started feeling worse and worse — not just for me, but for my friends too.

Second point:
Why is it that a completely clean system runs games beautifully, but after some time problems start appearing? What could be causing this? Could it be that more and more processes start flowing through the network card over time, and that’s where issues begin?

I just can’t believe that my PC (i5 14600K @ 5.1 GHz, RTX 3080, 32 GB DDR4 3600, 1 TB NVMe) is somehow a bottleneck for online games when none of the components ever exceed 80% usage — and ironically, when performance drops, the hardware usage actually goes down instead of up.

Third point:
I know about DPC latency, IRQ conflicts, process prioritization — I’ve tested all of that many times. In my case, DPC latency never made any real difference. No matter what values I had, the game could run great… or terribly.
I’ve used clean, untouched Windows images, I’ve used modded ones, I’ve tweaked systems myself — and it was always the same story: things run great for a while, then one day I turn on the PC, launch a match (without changing or updating anything), and suddenly the game performs noticeably worse than the day before.

I’ve tried different monitors — from Alienware TN panels, through Samsung VA, to LG IPS — and on every single one the game sometimes runs great and sometimes terribly.
I’ve also tested various DisplayPort and HDMI cables, different power strips, different Ethernet cables — nothing produced consistently stable results.

I played on my friend’s PC (32 GB DDR4, RTX 3090, i9‑13900K) with a 27" 240 Hz ASUS ROG monitor, and the games ran insanely well — smooth, responsive, with perfect hit‑reg — to the point where I couldn’t believe it. And yet, we were getting the same FPS.

I even bought an additional network card with an Intel chipset, swapped keyboards and mice, disabled various features, unplugged unnecessary peripherals — nothing made the performance consistently better.

And in the end I even moved to a new apartment (not to diagnose the issue :D), but the problems are still exactly the same.

It does happend on all my PC's but my current spec is :
Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X / Intel i5 14600k * 5.3ghz @ Gelid Bracket + Thermalright Frozen Prism 360 Black ARGB / Kingston FURY Renegade 2x16GB 3600MHz / MSI RTX 3080 GAMING X TRIO 10GB
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB + Lexar NM800 Pro 1TB + WD RED 2TB / Silver Monkey X Croft + 2x Sharkoon SilentStorm 140 ARGB / Aorus P850W 80+ GOLD / Acer Nitro XZ273UXbmiiphx 240hz + Asus 24" 16:10
Genesis Zircon XIII Custom / Temu Glass Mousepad / Steelseries Apex 9 TKL + Temu Keycaps
Turtle Beach 700 Gen 3 / KZ XTRA + Creative BT-W5
Razer Nommo 2.0 + Creative SoundBlaster G6
Pixel 9 Pro 16/512 @ Xiaomi Watch S2 Pro @ Vivo Tws 4 HiFi
So what might actually be the problem? Is it really ISP‑related, or is there something else going on that I’m not aware of?

Dont waste your calories, its all isp related. Every time i play from a different city, i perform better, even when i had a long break and i am mechanically worse compared to when i play from home on a 480hz setup. Confirmed by uncapping my fps (it goes above 750) and observing visible teleports and rubberband.
