"Updated" recommended G-Sync settings?

Hey all,

I've recently read a few posts and was wondering if there were some changes regarding the recommended G-Sync settings?

I've read that forcing V-Sync on globally is not really recommended anymore as it can cause issues and should instead be enabled in game.

Also I've stumbled across this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/s/S8MCXwuQzm

Is this formula "better" or more correct?

So as of now I would:
Activate G-Sync for full screen only
Activate V-Sync globally
Set a FPS Limiter to 324 or 328 (since I'm on a 360HZ monitor)
And do nothing in game.

Is that still the way to go?

It was never recommended in the first place, it's a common misinterpretation of the article that jorimt has written.

There isn't a single, official formula that Nvidia has put somewhere which confirms anything mentioned in there.
No one has reverse-engineered the exact formula employed by the automatic frame rate limiter either, at least publically.
They are all speculation / estimations.
Namely, one formula came from Kal (SpecialK dev), who has decided to undershoot the automatic Reflex-based frame rate limiter for his tool to work properly

1.) Set native refresh rate
2.) Toggle GSYNC+VSYNC(in-game toggle preferred)+Reflex (Reflex is available in >150 games on the market)
2.1) If your game doesn't support Nvidia Reflex, you can choose a arbitrary frame rate limiter value which is around the automatic frame rate cap of Reflex. Make sure to use the in-game limiter, as that will ensure no additional overhead from external solutions.
3.) Play

Thank you very much :)

So in game limiter is the better option?

If your game doesn't support Reflex, yes.
If your game supports Reflex, let the automatic frame rate limiter (gets enabled when you do GSYNC+VSYNC+Reflex) do the limiting for you and run uncapped in-game.

Edit from the future:
Addendum to non-Reflex capable games (vast majority on the market): viewtopic.php?p=123620#p123620

So I did some more digging around and never really encountered the V-Sync in game method.

Is it all just wrong?

Ingame vsync is usually fine. But there are certain games where vsync functionality is broken in some way, for such games I do a per-app override via the Nvidia Control Panel.
Global overrides aren't recommended because they could affect apps other than games.

To add to what was already stated here...
I've read that forcing V-Sync on globally is not really recommended anymore as it can cause issues and should instead be enabled in game.
My optimal settings only specify the location of the setting, and what it should be set to, not whether it should be set globally or per profile.

This was intentional, as 1) the more specific I make my recommendations, the more dated they can become over time, and 2) they are only intended as a high-level starting point.

I personally enable V-SYNC per game profile via Nvidia Inspector.
Is this formula "better" or more correct?
To be clear, my optimal settings don't recommend a literal -3FPS, but instead recommend to "Set (a minimum of) 3 FPS limit below display’s maximum refresh rate".

Again, this is intended as a starting point; depending on the achievable frametime performance of your system + game + chosen framerate limiter paired with your give physical refresh rate, you may need a lower limit.

General rule is better frametime performance = less framerate needs to be below physical refresh rate (and visa-versa).
Activate G-Sync for full screen only
If the game in question supports a newer flip model (almost anything using DX12, essentially), yes, if not, and you're using legacy borderless/windowed mode in-game, you may need to enable G-SYNC for windowed mode as well, but I recommend you set that per profile in this case:
https://blurbusters.com/gsync/gsync101- ... ttings/14/
Set up G-SYNC > Enable G-SYNC, G-SYNC Compatible > Enable for full screen mode
(see Closing FAQ #5 for “Enable for windowed and full screen mode” recommendations)
