Extension cords/power conditioners/surge protectors worsening problems?

I gave up on gaming a few years ago because of the problems we all face here, but the negative effects were still noticeable on my second passion - TV. Poor image quality, lag, audiovisual sync issues, lousy audio quality.

I bought a Sony TV in April 2023 and connected it to a Tacima power conditioner. I have never been happy with the picture or performance. On a hunch last week, I decided to connect it to a plain old extension cord (which originally had surge protection that no longer works). To my surprise the image quality on the TV was instantly better, particularly in the whites, which were no longer eye-searingly bright. Even navigating the UI felt more responsive. Motion looked better and the audio was properly synced. Researching this, I found a couple of reviews reporting the same about the Tacima, and they explain it better than I do:

I then decided to buy a Belkin surge protector and it had the same problem as the Tacima, so I've gone back to my old extension cord. This has got me thinking - could these so called 'protections' actually be making our problems worse? I never would've expected the extension cord I chose could make such a difference.
