For those playing cs 2 and getting desync coming from internet and ISP

Post by darkbebe » 01 Mar 2026, 23:26

Hello guys ,

As many, i'm suffering from desync often and can't appreciate cs 2 . Getting desync meaning erratic ennemies movement but the worse is really really bad hit registration . i have fiber & perfect bufferbloat , no loss /smooth & low jitter. Tried every ISP of my island 4 fiber isp + 4G/5G & even starlink but starlink isn't reliable enough for my island.

(On lan vs bots my game is perfect.)

38 ping but hit register is like 300 ping. i'm a really high skilled player and can't even be at 10% of my real skill because of that. Suffering from it since cs go. like 2% of the games are perfect , 8% are good and 40% are awful 50% are playable but frustrating.

i would like to talk to you and ask you a thing about one specific subject : STEAM RELAYS

So this morning (really early with few chance of internet congestion) i launched cs 2 on public online deathmatch and can't even hit bots. I'm on relay Jnb#36. So I restart the game , now i'm on relay Jnb#82 and can hit easily those bots.

i noticed in many games that sometimes i start a perfect game , killing everyone and suddenly i can't hit anything. then i check and i get
a migration : relay # switch from X to Y and the awful game and feeling start . No hit reg at all . Sometimes it can be the opposite it can be really bad and become suddenly really good ! i'm actually listing every relays of jnb (Johannesburg , because i play on South african servers) and the feelings on each.
There are like 100 relays from #1 to #99 for South africa. from #1 to #49 it has the same ip with different ports and same for #50 to #99

In a game i can have like 3 migrations sometime so 4 different relays during the game. Sometime no migration at all.

Message in console is like
[SteamNetSockets] [#668313876 SDR server steamid:90282339481462786 vport 0 'server'] Received request to migrate to 155.133.238.178:27045 from jnb#58 (155.133.238.194:27026).
[SteamNetSockets] [#668313876 SDR server steamid:90282339481462786 vport 0 'server'] Started migration to jnb#31 (155.133.238.178:27045) at request of current primary jnb#58 (155.133.238.194:27026)
[SteamNetSockets] [#668313876 SDR server steamid:90282339481462786 vport 0 'server'] Requesting session from jnb#31 (155.133.238.178:27045). Ping = 49 = 49+0 (front+back). Rank=1 Score=53

So my questions are : Is there a way to chose our relay and not getting attributed randomly? Or is there a way at least to not getting migrations and stay on the same relay?
If i could stop those random migrations i'm pretty sure i could have good games. i had exactly the same problem on cs go which already had relays.
I just sent a message to fletcher from valve cs 2 , i really hope he will read , answer and study this thing.

Relay is attributed when you launch cs 2 . As long as you're not getting forced migration from Steam system it won't change. Even if you launch a VPN. The only way to switch relay , it is by restarting the game or getting the random forced migration.
You can check which is your relay in console when you join an online server (it has to be a steam one , not private)
It will say "Requesting Session from jnb#58 (155.133.238.194:27026) etc"

Have a good day guys.
