Flickering and motion blur reduction in Viewfinders and VR headsets

Ask about motion blur reduction in gaming monitors. Includes ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur), NVIDIA LightBoost, ASUS ELMB, BenQ/Zowie DyAc, ToastyX, black frame insertion (BFI), and now framerate-based motion blur reduction (framegen / LSS / etc).

Flickering and motion blur reduction in Viewfinders and VR headsets

Post by Nitram » 09 Aug 2026, 06:44

Hello everyone,
I am curious about the blur reduction features used in viewfinders (cameras) and VR headset display panels.
For instance I had several question after watching a youtube video titled "Nikon Z6 III Viewfinder Refresh Rate Measured".
  • Is the horizontal black band related to some kind of rolling black frame insertion in view of motion blur reduction ? I found that sony microOled displays often use 0.9 duty cycle which might be the case here.
  • How is this different from PWM on a smartphone ? Is it less eye straining ? (few infos online on that matter and might be the topic for another forum)
Thank you all!
