What about 60fps?

Post by TenmillionDead » 16 Jan 2015, 21:50

After endless playing around with my xl2411z monitor, I've finally found acceptable settings for playing (some) games in 120fps. Unfortunately, my 670 can't play most games at 120fps. I've tried multiple different settings when playing games at 60hz, but I've yet to find anything that doesn't make my games extremely blurry. My previous 60hz monitor (which is set up right next to this current monitor), plays games at 60fps with much more fluidity than the xl2411z. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to make games at 60fps playable on this monitor?

Yes. First of all, make sure that you have Single Strobe off. Just check the override button in the blurbusters strobe utility. Then, it's very useful to have a custom resolution with the VT tweak. These are my timings for 60Hz:

Keep the crosstalk zone at the left, or use the monitor's service menu and put strobe phase to the 90s (this will reduce input lag by one frame. WARNING: if you go back to higher refresh rates, it will give you a black screen with blur reduction on. Make sure to put the crosstalk setting to the left after you try this.).

After those steps, it should be good for 60Hz with blur reduction. No blurriness at all.

Just to make sure I did this correctly, these are the exact steps I took:

1. I created a custom resolution identical to the one you provided and applied it

2. I turned blur reduction on and went into the monitor's service menu and made sure single strobe was set to 'off', as well as turned strobe phase up to 95.

The only other question I have is what should my AMA setting be at this refresh rate. I usually have it off at 120hz (with the vt total trick)

Choose what you like. At low refresh rates, the downsides of AMA High are more difficult to notice. Try both modes, and remember to toggle off and on blur reduction if you select AMA High in the OSD (it's a slightly different setting, more subtle effects if you don't touch it after enabling blur reduction).

Another solution is to use 120Hz and enable the NVidia frame rate limiter (set it to 60FPS) using NVidia Inspector. You can do it globally, or on a per-game basis.

As a side effect, this will result in much less input lag with vsync compared to running the monitor at 60Hz. It's what I would recommend. Put those 120Hz to good use to lower your input lag at 60FPS :-) It's not exactly G-Sync levels of input lag, but it still feels much better than 60FPS at 60Hz.

There's also the "1/2 Vsync" option in the nvidia control panel (which will give you 60FPS vsync when running at 120Hz), though this seems to not help as much with input lag as the frame limiter method. But you can try it, since it the input lag results could be game-specific.

I guess I just can't seem to get 60fps to work well with blur reduction enabled, it gives me really horrible image ghosting on every setting that was suggested to me in this thread. I did find that 1/2 refresh rate vsync without blur reduction actually made 60fps games playable, so I think I'll stick with that.

Did you ENABLE single strobe in the service menu?
60 hz blur reduction is going to be a ghost fest unless you force single strobe.

(the windows blur busters' utility can enable single strobe just by checking the "allow customization" checkbox).
Do NOT attempt to use 50hz refresh rate if single strobe is enabled!

I might be doing this incorrectly but I've found that I cant force single strobe on at 60hz without going blind from the flickering.

The flickering is normal, like a 60Hz CRT. I almost don't notice it while gaming, but for desktop usage it hurts.

Try creating custom resolutions between 66.667Hz (exact divisor of a 1000Hz mouse) and 85Hz. I stop noticing the flickering completely around 75Hz.

If a game is more or less demanding, try different refresh rates. I think you can create 32 custom resolutions or so.

You're right, it is much less noticeable while gaming. Thanks for all the help, I'm definitely much happier with this monitor now.
